Drivetrain Close Ratio 6-Speed Gear Box
I tried searching for this subject and I couldn't really see anything in the open about it. Does anyone know if there is going to be an aftermarket gear box comming out with closer gear ratios? I have no idea what the ratios are right now, but this seemed like an area that needed to be addressed. If one dose come out, I hope it isn't ike the $25,000 gear box that Quaiffe sells for the Jetta!
I cannot answer your question but I have to say... The 6-speed's gearing seems like it's set close enough, unless you mean just for the 5-speed's, thats different (I dont know really, hehe).

Well the S already has a close ratio 6 speed. Some people complain about 1st gear but I think it's more of an issue of a lack of low end torque.

I'd agree. I'd also thiink that changing the trans would be a very expensive performance option!

Isn't the 1st gear in the S a bit taller than the Cooper? I thought I remembered reading that the S' extra HP and torque were balanced a bit by the coopers smaller first gear, yielding acceleration numbers that are closer than one would think. Could you swap in a cooper 1st gear?
the Cooper has a traditional 2-layshaft tranny, and the S has a compact 3-layshaft design. There isn't even a cold day in hell you could interchange any of their parts!
The "tall" first gear is more suited to autocross and roadcourses, and isn't necessarily the best ratio for street driving. Apart from that, there is no reason for anyone to develop an aftermarket transmission.
Cooperspeed is mighty spoiled; try driving a '73 2002 with a 4-speed manual, HA!

Ryan

Oh, where 70 MPH = 4400 rpm? I remeber those days. I beat out my transmission hump with a sledge, and used an E21 5 speed, with a shortened and balanced driveshaft. Boy was it worth it!
I miss that car

That is SO cool you fitted an old 3-er 5-speed in your 2002!!!!
What's next, a 5 liter V-12 in an E36?!
sometime in the future, I'd love to find a nice '74 tii as retro-fun!
