Cosworth Head, DFIC Installed!

Also an M7-OCC and 180 degree thermostat. All I can say is WOW! I went up my 9% grade at 55mph in 6th gear. The outside temp was 95 and the elevation was 3000'. I could hold my speed and maybe gain a little, which I have never been able to do before. The water and oil temps were a lot lower, too. My grin just keeps getting bigger.

Nice. I like your setup man, no bling bling BS red and purple wires running all over the engine compartment. The paint-matched STB is a nice touch. Enjoy it.

nice setup!
i was at mini madness the other day and got a good look at a cosworth head. I was surprised that they were not ported that much you could see how far they ported it, and it doesn't have bigger valves. george then showed me another ported head that was much better then the cosworth, cleaner and actually got into the head and widened it out, it also had bigger valves. I'm sure that there is a gain with the cosworth head but seems like it doesn't deserve the cosworth name!

Hmmmm, interesting. Just curious though..., what is you personal background on this stuff? When you tested the heads did you really find that a larger valved and ultra board out and polished intake and exhaust ports were better?
Does George sell the Cosworth head at a discount because it's not as good as the others? ? .... Oh, ..... that's right, ... George doesn't sell the Cosworth head, ... only M7 does. :impatient

I guess my long winded point is that such a post, one in which your claim "...it doesn't deserve the cosworth name!" should at least be backed up with some research and not just from a statement made by someone who can't sell you the head in the first place. I'm wondering how many Cosworth heads you have seen in your life. A bunch I would imagine for such a bold statement to be made.

I have a head with larger valves and unless you can support the flow with larger pump I don't think it helps......I think of it like this...... blow air through tube about 1" dia. x 12" long and notice that there is a steady stream at the end that could blow out a candle ..... now "port" that out to about 6 inches and try to blow out a candle....you can't.... there is not enough pressure.....(way over simplified but it illustrates the concept) porting the heads without increasing the "pump" can have this same effect.....the m45 SC is very limited.... I lost torque and gained some power at the high end over 5500.....I will soon install the M62 SC which should be able to better take advantage of my oversize valves (the 62 kit is a larger pump).... people with the Cosworth head are reporting very good gains across the board. "Hornguys" who is very knowledgeable has reported very good things about his Cosworth..... and Jim has tried a "thing or two" ...... I keep telling people that there is a whole lot more that we don't know about the synergy of our engines....Dave at DDM, who is developing the 62 kit is looking for the "bottle necks" right now....

BTW, Dave at DDM, who develops Miata parts and is now turning his attention to the MIni maintains that the Miata engine has been much more scutinized, poured over and there is much more is known about how to get more power from it....what works and what doesn't, than in our Mini engines.... makes sense ... it has been around a lot longer

I love when people slam others on a forum for their upgrades or try to disqualify them in some way instead of saying congrats!

At any rate both peices look sharp under there, I would love to have either of those to compliment what I already have.

Has anyone else noticed that the M7 logo on the ic is crooked? Don't get me wrong, your engine package is a beautiful thing to behold, but that tilted logo would drive me nuts. Sorry to be so picky.

Yes, I saw it and I agree. I would have had that off in a second and tried again, or just gone without rather then have it crooked....

Ran out of time to worry about the sticker. I had to get the car back together in time to drive 8 hours for a network emergency. I'm sure glad I got the car working the first time.

I agree with Spiderx and Onasled. Just making the ports bigger and putting bigger valves in a head doesn't necessarily make the most power for the application. Velocity of the air through the system is also very important. Maybe if I was going to race my MINI and stay above 5000 rpm all the time
I would want bigger valves, but I don't want to lose low end torque and and all around drivablity. And I haven't lost that with the Cosworth head which also gave me a significant increase in power where I needed it. So let the bashers bore and enlarge because I will be enjoying a head that was actually engineered by a company that knows what it's doing.

Oh, and thanks for the comments, nice and otherwise. It's hard to improve things without them. Working in a vacuum seldom produces the best results. I'll be in Monterey about noon if anybody want's to see it in person.

Steve, have a great time! Sorry I can't meet ya...

Cosworth will do bigger valves, upon request, most notably for the racers who will live at higher RPM levels, as mentioned earlier. For the vast majority of us, it would just not make sense. As Bob alludes, with the M62, that might change things though. Once Peter can get a finished 62 kit, it will be neat to see what head experimentation might reveal.

Madness was/is actually at the Monterey Historics, not as a paying vendor though. They brought a yellow MCS, with lambo doors, and camped in the MINI corral soliciting... It was a little strange.

Awesome Setup

Steve, the set up looks awesome. It looks a lot better than I expected in black. I am sure it drives a lot better also. Hopefully, I will be in the Central Valley for the next meeting to see it in person, take care.

I hope you are well for the next event. The paying vendors were somewhat peeved at Madness and he was backed off a bit, but not totally. The M62 should be a great addition to the MINI mod components, though it is a large initial expense. Hopefully it gets back to Spiderx and DDM for testing.

We'll be back from MTTS for the meeting on Sept. 22. I'm sure there will be a lot to see and talk about. Hope you can make it.
