How high can I lift the engine?

I just finished putting in an M7 16% pulley this weekend. I'm a real newbie when it comes to working on cars, but Randy's how-to was invaluable. I struggled a bit removing the tensioner and even removing the pulley due to lack of room. I think my difficulties might have been because I didn't lift the engine high enough.

I had the engine lifted to where the supercharger shaft just cleared the top of the passenger fender. The pulley came off with just millimeters to spare before bumping into the fender - and the lower two tensioner bolts were only accessible from under the car.

How high could/should I have raised it? Could I have raised it so the entire pulley was above the fender (and perhaps above the raised "box" on the fender)? Could I have raised it up all the way so that I could've accessed the lower tensioner bolts from above?

shouldn't powerlifting questions be in the off-topic forum?

My jack was broken - so I didn't have a choice!

i just lifted it high enough to clear the frame and puller . the rear tensioner bolts are just tough to get at . you've got drive shafts and other stuff to consider so you don't want to go nuts about it . like the pulley or what?!!!!

There is a definite difference! I headed to work this morning with a nice 62 degree temp outside, and just couldn't keep from mashing the pedal. The sound from the Gatorback belt sounds cool too!
