Not knowing what the DMH "aftercooler" looks like, I can not speculate as to whether it's a copy or not. That said, I work in manufacturing and have to fight copy's all the time. When some one comes up with a great idea like the DFIC there will always be some one trying to jump the train.

Patent papers can be anything from the initial application all the way through the entire wrapper (the entire file at the U.S. PTO), which would include the issued patent. Absent a patent number, you don't have a patent.

Try 5 years now (for average time to process). I am involved in a software patent application and it is now in its 6th year of tennis (examiner objects to a claim and sends his objection back to us, we respond to the objection and send our response back to the examiner, and, and, and...).

You can also get a Design patent that says, in so many words, "I claim the invention of a frimble-hanger that looks like this."

Interestingly, the Patent Office is the only US Gov't agency that is required by statute to be helpful to applicants, and they are. They even provide MS-Word document templates and PDF's for all the forms.

My first patent took almost exactly a year for the Patent Office to process, and I did all research and writing myself - no big deal - about 3 days work to do the research and figure out their forms and procedures - again, all online.

As to whether there is anything unique or patentable about this particular invention, that's not clear.
While technically, you are correct, you are missing the art of describing the claims. If you take a do-it-yourself approach, you may miss a fundamental claim because you drafted the language incorrectly. There are no do-overs in patent litigation. If you drafted the claims incorrectly, that is it, your patent does not cover what you intended to say; it only covers what you actually said. Also, just because you make a claim and the examiner accepts your claim, doesn't mean that you can go around shutting down infringers of your patent. You have a leg up on the infringers, but they do have defenses that they can raise. I think the general rule is that the more tehnical a potential patent, the more you need the services of a reputable patent lawyer/firm.

Hey you guys all wrapped up in this patent stuff, your walking all over dmh's thread and going way off topic.
Can you show him a bit of respect, he's working for all us here.
Thanks

You do have a point (about the thread hijack). The patent stuff resonated with me because of a personal situation. I probably have contributed most to the hijack; so, if anyone was offended or otherwise put off, my appologies.

not for nothing, but i'm very intrigued by this. if it is well made and works as well as the DFIC, i for one would buy it especially @ $650!! i was hoping to get myself a DFIC for X-Mas but with the ceramic coating and carbon scoop (now special order only) it will be over $1,000!! if dmh is allowed to build this thing and sell it (which i don't see why not) count me in! truth be told i'd still rather have the M7 unit but would rather not spend that much. i don't see why the I/Cs for these cars are so expensive when STI and EVO units are so much bigger and come with so much plumbing are also around $800-$1,000. i would like to SEE this unit before sending any money though.

I have decided to curtail my development of the aftercooler and focus my efforts elsewhere (in more useful ways to the NAM/Mini community). Stay tuned as plans will be announced shortly.

After all of the hoop-la about this and what it can do. This is what we get.
Not a very good start.

Does this have anything to do with the patent issue?

--Biting tongue--

This is not the best way to introduce yourself to NAM, with a tease of this stature...

Not the wisest approach to the volitile world of message boards.

Hey guys, chill a bit here. Your like an agree mob...

Give Don some time to at least answer if he even feels he needs to.
I truly feel that that he will become an important contributor to our Mini's performance in short time.

Hey dmh - I noticed you're in Warren, NJ. I work down the road in Chatham. Is your shop open to the public?

Don's gonna kill me for leaking this super-top secret photo of his aftercooler - but I figured.......what the hay!

As you can see, it looks absolutely nothing like the bleeding DFIC - so stop assuming that the two designs are similar.

Don has secretly told me that once he figures on a way to lighten the unit by a 150 or so pounds, shrink it by 99% and lose the wheels it should be ready for sale. I think he's anticipating a Christmas release - just don't ask Christmas of which year........

In addtion to the toilet plunger and proctoscope plug-ins shown above, rumor has it that it will have meringue and dough beater attachments. It will make the Air Gain System all but obsolete........plus you will be able to get in a delicious carbon fiber and a scrumptious gel coat.

The sister shop, Precision Motorsports Racing, is in your town -- Califon. So is one of our fabricators. The Mini business is in Warren. Just call before you want to come by and I'll make sure I am there. 732-748-1964.
