Temperature reduces HP?

Hi everyone:

I did few 0-60 runs with my little gaget (Beltronic FX1, Gtech like device) last night, the temperature was approximate 30C, the result were bad, I kept get times in between 6.6sec ~7sec My previous runs were done by mid March and the average was 5.8sec ~ 6.0sec, since then, the only performance mod I made was the VGS...

Now I am confuse about if it is the temperature or the VGS which effect my 0-60 times... The runs were done by the same location, same launch technic, but different temperature and humidity.

As for the VGS, I really like it, it makes my MCS runs much smoother than before, but if it is the reason which slows down my MCS, for sure I would like to go back to stock form (or there could be a leak? But I didn't hear any leak sound while driving..).

The other thing I found was the boost though my boost gauge, I was used to run approximate 17PSI before, but now is maximum at 15PSI... :( Could it be the hot air or

Any information will be appreciate.

Hot air kills power, you got it!

Yep. Hot = less molecules per cubic <insert favorite measurement here>

Thanks for the replies, much appreciate. Is there any equation or reference which can show me how much power will I lose by the hotter temperature?

I was so supprise about the times I got yesterday, and I will wait till the temperature cool down to 20C~ before doing some more runs.

Best regards

Cool, dry air is our friend. While we are the mercy of ambient conditons for our respective areas, there are things that we can do to improve matters. Some that come-to-mind:

1. The header eminates a lot of heat in the engine bay. After a 45 min drive home tonight (90 degree ambient temps), I opened the hood and measured the temp on the shield over the header and it read 265 degrees F. The plastic wall near the cowl was around 135 or so.

The air ingested by the intake is thus impacted. Other components are also heated more as well... Internally and externally ceramic-coating the header should help. I'll be getting my SuperSprint header back, I hope tomorrow...

2. With heating rising, let it escape outward. It looks like vents or louvers (M7) are soon to be here!

3. As some have done already, better insulate the intake from hotter engine bay air and/or better allow it access to cooler amibient air. Relocation might be a wise move, such as the HAI or AGS...

4. An improved IC can help further drop charged temps and what the engine will use for combustion. Excessively hot air makes for the dumping of fuel in an effort to cool things, and that makes for power loss. I have the DFIC coming later this week, and the results thus far have been promising. To further help here, spraying (outside the IC) and injection (within) can be added...

5. The addition of cooler t-stat (I think only M7, 180 F), and an oil cooler can also help...

but would you lose boost just because of hotter weather?

Thanks a lot for the information! I am thinking about my next mod will be the Alta header, and probably will coat it with the Jethot ceramic, hope it helps.

As for the boost lost, I think it happen since I had the boost gauge installed; right after the boost gauge installed, I noticed that I no longer get the "DSC + CEL" lights on anymore when I am on WOT (usually, it happens when I rev it to redline, or someone mentioned it is up to 17psi, which cause the lights on). The maximum boost I got was 15psi since then, but I still cannot find any leak though the host cables.

I will do some runs again when the temperature get back to 20C~, then I will update the times by telling the different.

Hi MSFITOY, it sounds scary with the VGS... I may go to take off the VGS back to stock form by seeing the different. And how about the Ryephile BPV? If I only get it install, will it cause the same heat issue?

Thanks

I have no testing data on the Ryephle BPV so I don't have any information to offer in that regard...

Again, my testing was only based on my Mini so I cannot say that the VGS's negative effects is true for others...
