Doing a little Googling, I found the following:

Same company, different application

More detailed info on the Smart Tuner piggyback chip

Note that in this last example, the thing's available -- mapped for a BMW -- for only $150 bucks. I wonder what the additional $500 gets you on the MINI version.

And that's just scratching the surface with some simple web searching. I'm sure that more could be found if I took more than 30 seconds to look.

I donno...sounds like something that could get you in a whole lot of trouble at worst, or at least be a waste of money. Others?

There is a thread on this very site somewhere regarding this product but Im not a regular here so I dont know how to find it I've spoken to Randy @ MINI Motorsport about it and I believe its now being developed by him. It requires you to cut the factory harness in approx 6 places to interface this piggyback unit. I spoke with Bob @ Ida Automotive about this ~ 6 months ago and he seemed like an fairly knowledgable guy, but I was turned off by hacking into the harness. I've had bad experiences in the past (ie stranded 500 miles from home).

FWIW, the unit on ebay has the same phone number as Ida Automotive.

The $150 one is a previous generation of the same unit (SMT-5?). I imagine its a closeout price on a discontinued model.

New Info:

I found out that this mod can be disabled using a plugin device. This sounds good, because I want to have the ability to disably it if needed. I think that as long as the connections are done correctly (Solder and Heat shrink wrapping), there should not be an issue of them disconnection, or it not working, esp with the bypas plug.

i'm not to thrilled about cutting the harness, but I'm not thrilled by having to send out my ECU either, esp since my car is a daily driver as well.
