Bad things happen when I start to think....

Ok well i have a few projects a brewing in the back of my mind, a few of which are going to be make reality here very soon.

First one, was a little bypass valve testing. Has anyone just completly blocked off the BPV? I cnat see it doinganything but giving me crap gas mileage and keeping the car in boost longer.

Also, has anyone ever tested replacing the BPV with a stiff blow off? I cant see any reason why a blow off coulnt be used in place of the BPV, and it would really help in tunability.

more to come....

Does the ECU take any signals from the bypass valve to figure out if it is working? That could be annoying if it began complaining...?

Umm, could you replace the BPV with a BOV, and would you still get the cool "SWOOSH" sound without a turbo?

All I see is a vaccum line coming from the BPV.

If I cant either block it of or put on a blow off instead, I could very easily regulate the ammount of vaccum going to the BPV with a valve inlne with the vaccum hose.

I already tried zip tying the valve closed completely, and it seemed to have no bad effects, So I see no reason why I couldnt put a plate over the opening completely.

If I was in it for the sound, my car would have a trubo on it already. Boost is boost, i'm sure it will sound exactly the same.

In answer to your first question, i wouldn't recommend it. The BPV isn't just there to help your gas mileage. The BPV releases pressure that would otherwise cycle back through the supercharger, damaging the vanes... If you want a mod that holds the car in boost longer, i'd recommend the VGS, and also recalibrating your BPV to shut with no leaks

With regards to venting the boost to atmosphere rather than back into the intake stream/SC inlet, i can't see any issue other than if there is a sensor there that detects inlet air density/pressure. If there is, the sensor would see a higher vacuum (i think) and throw a fit. But if that's the only problem, hell i'd even give it a go

Well, i think im going it make an adapter plate and tube so I cna bolt on a BPV to the stock BPV location and see what happens.

Now, i need to go find someone that will allow me to barrow their blow off for a while, lol

Putting a blowoff valve in a supercharged car such as the MINI is pointless, since you'd be wasting what precious boost there is. Unlike a turbo engine, the throttle body is not set into the intake tract where it can block boosted airflow heading into the intake manifold. Also, turbo engines need some sort of 'safety valve' to prevent overboosting, since more boost winds up making more boost. A supercharged engine has the ultimate boost level mechanically locked via blower drive speeds and displacement, if you are overboosting, it's better to underdrive the blower than to vent the pressure, otherwise you will lose too much power to blower driving losses. Blowoff valves are used in twincharged engine though. Supercharger 'blowoff valves' are safety devices used on radical blown engines to prevent an engine backfire from destroying the supercharger itself. The BPV on the MINI engine is used not only to help increase the mileage, but to help regulate the intake airflow as well. Upon closing the throttle suddenly after running at max boost, the BPV opens via pre-blower vacuum Without this, there is a short period of time where the column of boosted air in the supercharger, intercooler and manifold will be in the wrong proportion to the throttle opening and fuel metering, resulting in lean conditions. This will throw codes in addition to putting the engine into a protection mode of retarded timing and fuel dumping. The VGS mod seems to sit at the edge of benefit versus code throwing, it all depends on the car. Best thing to do is to 'blueprint' your BPV to close tightly with no binding, and perhaps adding the 'Ryephix' stronger spring or the VGS.
