I've had the pulley on for a couple of days and must say it is really a nice upgrade. It really beefs up the mid-range torque and I think with an ECU upgrade and other flow upgrades (throttle body, exhaust) it could bring up the top end a lot too.

This is power you can really feel for a decent price (figure about 6 hours of labor). With the air intake and Randy's intake mod, it really screams like a demon above 5000RPM at full throttle; a very cool sound. But it is nice and quiet under normal acceleration.

Below is a dyno graph comparing before and after the pulley. Run 1 has only the air intake and run 4 has the pulley and Randy's intake mod. You can see how nicely the mid-range torque is beefed up (close to 20 ft-lbs peak gain in this area of the curve). There also a peak gain of 20WHP. Max torque gain is about 17 ft-lbs and max HP gain is about 13WHP. All pretty much in the expected ballpark. Max HP gain is little lower than some others are getting but given the margins of error in dyno runs it is close enough.

Excellent! How do you like that fat torque curve?

I think there are quite a few of us who are impatiently waiting for the ECU you all are working on before getting the pulley. Keep up the great work guys! We read this stuff up like highschool boys read playboy!

I wish the ECU stuff was easy - like as easy as opening up a centerfold

Seriously, there have been some progresses made in the ECU area, but so far it's been with "piggy back" computers that require splicing 7 wires. How many folks would be willing to do that before I invest all of the money in buying 6 of the units and spend the time on the dyno tuning the program? There are definitely gains to be had using this technology, but as Andy and a few others have stated, it isn't the most elegant way to do the tuning.

I'm pretty impressed with those torque gains.

You actually needed MORE evidence?

I don't want to splice anything. I'm dying to get my hands on a "cleaner" ECU -THAT would be great!

ANdy,

I have tried the OBDII port flash - that's what Superchips uses. I would have loved for it to have made power, but it just plain doesn't. I invested quite a bit of cash in that system, and I've tried out the EVOTech stuff that is flashed onto the ECU as well.

I'm still looking! Let me know if MTH has something that you think may make gains. From the charts you had with the MTH, it didn't look like it was any better than the Superchips software. Is that what you found too?

For those that are waiting for the ECU before doing the pulley; DON"T WAIT! The two are independent upgrades and the pulley is the bigger gain item. The ECU will just improve upon it. But you get a great fat torque increase from the pulley alone. JUST DO IT!

Yeah, but if you're likely to use WOT much (in SCCA Solo II, not on the street), don't you run the risk of running too rich, and cooking your cat? I've witnessed the destruction that can result from a cooked cat clogged exhaust system (no, this does not mean you should get rid of your cat).

The MINI runs just as rich in stock form so I wouldn't use that a deciding factor for the pulley. Also, it does not run unreasonably rich. Finally, if you run your car at the track a lot you'll fry the cats anyway.

The wife is going to kill me but more and more I want to get the Pulley. I'm working her up for the John Cooper Works kit first, the pulley will happen if that falls through. It's (Cooper S kit) crazy expensive but I like the security of the warranty and have to admitt that the "Cooper" name has played quite a roll in my family. My dad had a track prepared Cooper S he used to race back in the late 60's early 70's. Sort of a nostalgia thing.

Wish me luck, I'm sure this will be a loosing battle.

Here is a link to a little movie I made during the dyno run. You'll need Quicktime V6 to view. You need to Righ-Click-->Save Target As on the link and them open it. It is about 1.7MB in size.

Link to movie...
