I am leaning towards the MagnaFlow exhaust but haven't made my final decsion as of yet. I really do not like the look of the tips and was wanting to know if anyone has looked into replacing the tips or actually done it? Would this be a major undertaking?

Also, using the power to weight ratio measure, are there any other exhaust systems available that are less weight than the MagnaFlow but produce enough power to make the ratio comparission between the MagaFlow and any other exhaust system fairly even?

The tips could be cut off and others welded on. That's no biggie. Would alter the final sound though.

The Quicksilver exhaust is within 2-4hp of the Magna (M's 14hp to Q's 10-12hp) and is about half the weight.

If I recall some posts from Randy, the design of the tips had something to do with the performance of the MagnaFlow.

 

How about chopping off the boxster-esque oval tip on the QC and welding on two round tips like the stock, Borla, and Magnaflow exhausts. Something about that oval tip on an MCS gives me an involuntary nervous twitch.

 

I was thinking of cutting off the Magnaflow tips and putting on the stock tips. I just think the Magnaflow tips are a little too big for my taste, but I can deal with them if changing them would alter performance.

Believe it or not, the Magnaflow tips grow on you. At first, I didn't like them at all. Now I look back at the car every time I park just because of how cool they look.

That said, I do believe there may be some functionality to the tip design. The"racetrack" set-up of the Magnaflow does not provide a clear exit for the exhaust flow. The tips are shaped like a small venturi, or megaphone, which does accelerate the gas flow and makes a small low pressure area. This may be the reason for the tip design, and if you remove it, the flow just fends for itself and could lose power. This is just a theory, so if you do the mod, you may find this all to be hogwash - but I think it has validity.

I'm with Randy on this one; I didn't really like the MF tips at first but they grew on me.

Keep in mind that the stock tips are just a cover that is held on with an allen bolt. You may be suprised at the size of the stock pipe under there. This could make for a a tough time making a reduction pipe.

 

Thanks for the input from everyone. Knowing that others were not that thrilled over the tips at first does ease that concern.

As for the power to weight discussion in relation to accelartion power and all that, I was doing a little math and wanted to see if anyone had comments on the numbers. For a base weight of a 2003 Mini Cooper S minus exhaust lets use 2600 lbs. and for base at wheel horse power lets use 147 hp. That gives a power to weight ratio of .0565. Add the Magnaflow exhaust at a weight of 38 lbs. and an additional max hp gain of 13 and that yeilds a ratio of .0607. Add the QuickSilver exhaust at a weight of 25 lbs. and an additional max hp gain of 13 and that yeilds a ratio of .0610.

I used numbers found in previous posts and from http://www.mcshp.org.

So the numbers indicate that the QuickSilver will yeild a slightly better performance. Do my numbers look correct? What numbers should I be using? I'm coming from a world of road racing motorcycles where the hp/weight ratio is looked at a lot more than just raw at wheel hp.

Not to be an antagonist here, but just an FYI. I emailed Magnaflow and asked about whether changing the tips would adversely affect performance. Much to my surprise, they said it wouldn't!

Something else to consider though. The base of the exit holes on the exhaust are spaced out somewhat, which would make it difficult to make any other tip look good on there.

This thought crossed my mind more than once especially when I saw a Boxter with some sweet slash-cut tips. Has anyone done this? I'd do it, but I don't know anything about metal works...
