Has anyone thought about trying to modify their factory S exhaust. My thought is to cut the pipe that connects the two mufflers and tie the driver side muffler into the pipe coming back from the cat. In some ways it would be a mirror of the QS exhaust. Check out the picture of the stock exhaust...

Yep, that has been done. The factory exhaust has a resonator on the passenger side and a muffler on the driver side. The gentleman that did this took the factory pipe right to the muffler on the driver side. He reported a slight seat of the pants difference, and a slight increase in volume.

Hope that helps!

If you're out there, would love to hear more about it. If he does not monitor this board, Randy, do you know how to get a hold of him?

I wish I could remember who it was - I talk to about 40 people a day. He gave me the full run down on it, so if there are any specific questions you would like answered, I could give it a shot.

I'm interested in a better understanding of sound change and if the car had been put on a dyno since the mod.

The car had not been put on a dyno, so that info isn't available.

The sound is again one of those subjective things that I've learned is very different from person to person. It was not loud according to the owner, just a bit throatier, with some additional throttle lift burble.

Hope that helps!

I am not the person that Randy talked with about this but I have this set up on my MINI S cost me 30 $. I plan to put an exhaust, header back, on but wanted to wait till the best stuff was out there. So untill then I wanted some thing cheep it has alot better sound and sounds like better flow and with the butt dyno a good 2 HP. The exhaust can run one muffler with three cuts and two welds. A 90 bend that points at the pass side muffler is cut and turned to point at the dr side muffler. The dr side muffler has a pipe from the pass side that needs to be cut. I had it done by a speed shop called CARS 2 in Melbourne but any exhaust place should do it for you not pipe bender needed.

Thanks for chiming in. I may give this a try. I was planning to get an exhaust some day as well but would rather spend the money on a pulley, tires and suspension. I'd still like a throatier sound.

Any ability to produce a sound clip?

Motor On.

Well I don't know about you, but 3 cuts and a weld sounds like permanent damage to me. Well, let's just say that putting it back may be trickier than coverting it originally.

It is not that much throatier but it gets rid of some of the tin sound if you know what I am sayin. It is easy enough to change but would not be as easy to change back. It is well worth the $ if you ask me you drop 8 pounds or so loosing the first muffler and lose some restriction. Its not the mod that you will keep forever but for the price its one you can afford now while saving for the next one.

I checked a local shop in town that said they could do this for about $40.00. Has anyone run dyno numbers yet? I like the idea of dropping weight also. It has got to improve at least a little? On a $/hp gain ratio it could be a winner? At least until I can come up with the bread for a real aftermarket performance exhaust.
