Drivetrain how many miles to break in a new cam?
how many miles to break in a new cam?
For those of you who have been watching I put the Schrick "race" cam in my car last week and took out the old Schrick "street cam" which they no longer produce..... the results so far are very positive but i have not taken the engine above 4K....so far about 250 mi. I was thinking that 500 mi would be good.....or shoul iwait for 1000..... any experienced folks out there.... the engine has 52K on it now.

I will contact Denon the NA importer/distributor
Thanks

. Good luck, and if you do get the scoop, kindly close this loop and share. I too will be doing this when I get a Cosworth head later this Summer...
Every time I've put in a new cam, I've always been most concerned about not idling the engine for very long at first, because that's when the splash-oiled cam lobes receive the least oiling (hence the standard recommendation for revving in neutral for 20 minutes). I don't think high rpm use of a new cam would be a problem.
I had mine idle at 3000rpm for 10 minutes. After that i beat the living sh*t out of the car for a good 2 hours. Never had any problems.

Most of the time (V8 info here) you vary the rpms from 1500 to 3000. 15-20 minutes.
I've never heard of a cam break in where you leave it at a constant rpm, it's a bad thing.
You must have applied the proper break in lube as well.
I've always changed the oil right afterwards. The moly is pretty thick and not oil filter friendly.
New oil and filter. Let the engine cool down. then take it out and drive it. Once well warmed you can pretty much run the snot out of it.

The time to ask was before you turned over the engine; anyway, here is an excerpt from and engine break-in article by Larry Widmer “…Lets discuss the apparently-confusing topic of engine break-in. I’ll attempt to make all of this as clear as possible for everyone. There are “other” methods of break-in out there on the internet, so it’s up to you to choose the one that suits your style. First, lets address camshaft break-in. If the camshaft(s), and rocker arms are new, or if previously-run rocker arms are being used on new, or different lobes (rocker arms weren’t kept in order), you should start the engine and bring the revs up between 2500 and 3000 rpm for about 20 minutes. Do not let the engine idle for prolonged periods.”
