Megan Racing Headers.

Hey everybody,
Just doing some research on the Megan Racing 2-piece Headers; I did a search here but with minor results. So here goes my main questions:

1. Why so cheap in comparison to other brands? Any of those who have it - had any (major) problems with installation?

2. In the Pilo Racing website, they claim that they're working on a Pilo Racing CAT, which I am assuming will be street legal; I tried e-mailing them but no response, does anybody know if indeed the new CAT would make it street-legal?

Thank you for any and all help,
Leo.

I just grabbed one to try. I am picking it up this week. I am going to make my own cat attachment thingy when I get it. I will be happy to PM you the results. I know there are a couple people on the board who are using them.

I'd love to get those results as well. I'm definitely considering the Megan header, along with Milltek, and the Supersprint.

count me in there too, i've been very interested in these. i wonder if anyone has had a dyno on them? i also emailed pilo but they most have something better to do then answer customers questions.

i also want to know how loud they are. i am sure they are loud without the cat, but with the cat, are they overly loud?

Let us know what you do with the cat installation, i hear a lot of people have shop throw the mini cat on them.

perhaps it would be a good time to take the pre cat off, i have heard of a few people doing that, but i am not quite sure what that would do to emissions.

Well, since Pilo is not answering any of their e-mails/calls, how about this question, then: if the headers are purchased, and they come with the "off road" stats, is there a place that sells a "high performance CAT"? And by high-performance I mean better than stock (a.k.a. aftermarket) that would fit these headers with minor problems?

I have asked an ALTA salesperson about selling the ALTA CAT by itself, but they weren't sure if that was possible. Also, would that be an extreme offence to any other companies out there? I'm not out to cheat anybody or anything like that, but for the price, the Megan headers are really standing out in my head, but then would need to either keep the stock CAT or change it with something better. So that's why the question, not trying to start a fight or anything.

Keep us posted on the results, please.
Leo.

It is fairly straight forward. Find a cat that is close or equal to the resonator in the 2nd part of the header. Then simply cut n paste or copy by making another simple jig. Personally I want to keep the test pipe as well as have the cat pipe. I will make a jig and go from there. I would be more than willing to loan the jig to anyone who wants to make their own cat pipe section.

I have the Megan/Pilo header. the 2 piece with a test pipe version. The cat version, as far as I have spoken with them and know, is not out yet. I was, overall, very impressed with the header-
Here are some images pre-installation:

nice thick flange: (with impressive, good looking welds)

I have some more, let me know if you want them, I have some of it installed too. It turns a beautiful shade of gold/blue after its been heated for just a few minutes.

As far as the price, that's why I bought it as opposed to the other headers out there. And I must say, I was not disappointed. came in a Megan Racing box, with all associated hardware. The only thing I did, I used the stock gasket, because the gasket they provide is, to me, a little too tall, and it seems it rests on a lip of the block, creating a small exhaust leak. So, if able, I would recommend reusing the stock gasket, or buying a new stock gasket to use.

If you're worried about a cat, you can just take the stock header to a muffler shop and get them to chop the cat off and have it welded up to the new exhaust. Reference the OBX header thread for pictures of what they did about that.

Be prepared for the sound. If you have exhaust (I have magnaflow), get ready to be really loud. This combo sounds good, I've had nothing but compliments about it, despite the decible level.

As for power, you can definately feel a difference. I don't think it's a stretch to say you'd be impressed

Do you have a sound byte you can post...How loud?

no sound clips...I don't have any way to record one...Loud is a relative term...you have the magnaflow...so you know what that sounds like...no imagine...pedal to the ground, that exhaust is like a 4 on the volume scale...with the header it's like turning the volume up..to say 7. It's hard to explain.

If it helps, it doesn't give me a headache, and I drove from Columbia SC to Baltimore MD (almost 10 hour drive) twice with the setup, without a backseat.

Just to clarify, are you running the Megan header with a cat attached, or without?

Thanks! I just wanted to make sure you hadn't added a removable cat to the mix.

So, since you're running it with the test pipe, that would account for the increase in loudness. I wonder how much increase there would be with a cat attached?

I don't think the cat is really for noise reduction. I honestly don't know that it would do much of anything for noise, especially if it's a high flow cat, which might as well be a test pipe.

sense you don't have the cat in you should try filling up with aviation fuel.

aviation fuel is high performance fuel, that is 100 octane that has very good energy levels. the reason you can't run it in cars is because of the catalytic converter doesn't like the lead thats is in the fuel and will catch on fire. but sense you have no cat you can use fuel with lead in it.

Any issues with installation? Any comparison to the other value priced header, the OBX?

As for the cat, is there any aftermarket one out there that is bolt on? Or will a muffler shop have to weld flanges onto an aftermarket cat?

check places like summit racing, you should be able to find a cat with flanges, most I've seen however do not have flanges, and will need to be welded in place. No big deal.

issues...depends on what you call issues. It was a huge pain in the *** to install with just two jackstands and one friend helping me. getting the old header out was no fun at all, because of the clearance between the ground and the bottom of the car. and if you have a strut bar, go ahead and take it off before you start..it will make things infinately easier.

Hi everyone, I ran into a problem when I install the megan header and the mid pipe, what happlen is I also have the B&M shifter for my 2005 S, it come with a new shifter box which is deeper than the stock where is above the exhaust, and the mid pipe is not fit that good also, the mid pipe point down a little, but soon i bolt it all up together is move up just enough to rub the shifter box, I end up cut the mid pipe up and re-weld it and it all fine. I also got the borla street exhaust, sound sweet and wasn't loud.

i took a look to see what summit had for cats, this one looks about right. 2.5" $150. which does up the price of this header over 50%. i bet there are other better deals out there.

The test pipe piece is shorter than you think...i just picked mine up today. I will post a measurement this weekend from inlet to outlet and give some suggestions as to which size cat I will use. Wait on that one...shop around trust me. I must say overall the system looks good. I am picky so I will give it a good look over tommorrow at work and report back as far as porting, welds and all that good stuff!!

If you're really worried about the cat, why not just use your stock cat? IF a muffler shop is going to have to weld it up there for you, why not add in another step and just get them to cut off the old one to use it?
