Andy,
I obviously want max pewer increase ..with minimum volume increase.
It's a trade off I know the power vs. the volume increase, but there must be ...some middle ground that I can be confortable with.

Morales...
rofl..
thanks for your insight

Peace,
D

d.....
Foam earplugs. You can keep them in that little
compartment in the door. I told you that with the
Magnaflow. BTW you are insane, but really, who
isn't?

As I didn't anser both your questions Dominic& 2 mini's.

Dominic I do hear a drone in the stock system. All systems drone, unfortunately some drone at a frequency that is incomfortable to certain individuals.
he stock systems combo of volume/droning is ...comfortable to hearing.

2 mini's..I do not hear a drone in my office. I think that comment was uncalled for. I've shown you nothing but respect here on this terrific MCO site. I am offened by your public comment.

Peace,
D

I know, the drone is quiet enough that it doesn't bother me, but it is there. However, I have heard some say the stock system doesn't drone. I was wondering if you could hear it or not. I know you've said you've been a musician for a while, even Beethoven went deaf and he didn't play Rock & Roll

the stock system definitely drones, especially in 6th gear and going up hills in 3rd or higher.

hey, we should start a little fund for D, if saved you money with muffler experiments send him a small donation

D-mini-ero,
Subsequent to your testing all availble exhaust options, and the significant time and money spent on the behalf of us golden ears. I have come to the following conclusion: Everything is a compromise to some degree. I will not compromise my audible comfort zone for more power. The stock exhaust is loud enough for me. I will find performance elsewhere.

I believe in the Lotus theory of less is more. I am going for weight reduction. If I can find an aftermarket exhaust that can save me 20-30 lbs AND NOT increase volume, even at minor HP gains I would feel that I am ahead.

Thanks for all your opinions on the various exhaust systems. Keep post'in

D-mini-ero,

Have you considered stock exhaust with the London Stainless /Quicksilver Header (I think they are one in the same but I don't really know)? I recall Randy writing that he did not notice much, if any, sound increase.

Issues might include:
1) I think Randy already had the Magnaflow on that car so maybe it is loud but under the Magnaflow, he couldn't tell.
2) Mini-Madness claims 12hp gain from the header alone. So it would seem to be of some benefit even with stock exhaust but I don't think we know for sure.
3) It is more expensive but if it solves the problem it'll probably be worth it.

Just a thought,

Good Luck

Chuck

Joke D. Didn't know you were so sensitive.
I don't mean to drone but earlier in the
post you humorously referred to people
calling you a 'slimeball.' And sometimes there
is a drone from fluorescents people tell me.
Now I know to be serious with you.
I do though find it hard to think someone
who has driven a Cobra would think the Magnaflow
is loud or drones years later??? Must have been
a 289...
Peace,
2

cdconsor,

I don't think the header will add much if any volume to the system - as you are still taking the flow through the resonator and muffler.

I'd be leary on the 12 hp - but it definitely makes some power.

Hope that helps!

Thanks Randy, it does help. But at this point if, D (or anyone else who wants to run quite, like me for instance) is now considering the Borla (heavy, only 7-9 hp as per your website) or the UUC (unknown) then I would think that the header would be a viable option.

Also, and I know this has pretty much been beaten to death, but if performance mods are not addative in hp, then you would get the most bang for your buck by doing only one exhaust mod (so the header would be utilized to its fullest extent (whatever that might turn out to be)). So I still think that the sweet spot for HP vs Noise might just be the header/stock exhaust combo.

Thanks,

Chuck

Oh and one more thing, are the Quicksilver and London Stainless Headers different.

The QS and London Stainless are one and the same.

I see your point about using the header with the stock exhaust, and just may pull the exhaust to bolt up the stock (if I can lift it!) exhaust and see the difference.

Randy,
If you did redyno your car with all the mods you've done (including the header) but with the stock exhaust, this would be very interesting to everyone. I think Dennis would really aprreciate it, but I know I'd be very interested in that one, as the stock exhaust is a quality part.
How's Zack?

Yeah!!! I've been promoting this idea on MCO for weeks, but no one seemed interested. When my S arrives, I too would like to see some modest gains without increasing noise level.

Randy, please do this test and let us know what the results are. There's a number of potential customers for this header/stock-exhaust option. Also very interested in the mid-range torque difference between the 4 into 1 header and the 4, 2, 1 design. The London header looks so nice, but I've had significant results with a try-y header on past cars.

Thanks for all your hard work!

James

Thanks Randy it sounds like there is some growing interest in this option. Take your time though, we all know you have more pressing issues.

If the results are favourable, anyone interested in a group buy for the header?

Cheers,

Chuck

Well it's seems that we have a new "lower volume" direction.

Cheers

We all agree it's a trade of between HP & volume ...so this might be the compromise that ...works.

You all know I will be glad to join in a group buy...consider me a member

Thank you... ALL...... for your input

Let's see where this road takes us ?

Peace,
D

Heya Dennis,
Just chiming in to say that following your quest to find what works for you is facinating, in a good way. I've been spending more time over here at MCO because of the performance threads. Great stuff!

"That's right! We're all individuals."
"I'm not!"

Sorry it took so long to get back to you, but went to the spring Thing in Clearwater.

So far I have had no problems with the ECU upgrade, I have had friens who have stock s drive mine and they can really feel the power. I am getting spoiled and I guess i will do a pulley and than head work and headers next.
