Well it doesnt look good.......Put it all back together and checked the compression prior to starting it and all looks good....Took it for a ride around the block and when it got to normal temps i lost the #1 cylinder again. Took the head off and saw a exh valve burnt so we changed it and put it back together and took it for another ride and same thing....Got up to temp and dropped the #1 compression plus broke the plug and jacked the top of my brand new piston. :impatient

Does anyone know what stock timing is,at WOT and what the MTH file adjusts it too? Cuz im getting reading at around 47-49 at wot and negative timing at idle.

You can find it here. Sorry, the x axis is in time, but the runs were starting around 2000 RPM or so. You're looking wayyy to advanced. You should also check the crank and cam sensors. Crank timing is defined by two missing teeth on what the crank position sensor is looking at. Not sure about the cam postition sensor.

Good luck!

Matt

I've never looked at the gear that's used for crank timing..... If you're measureing timing with a timing light, it's possible that the car THINKS it's timing is OK, when something has moved relative to where it should be. Can you get timing data via the OBD-II interface to compare with the timing light? IF they're different, you have a place to start looking.

I just looked at the Bentley manual. The "impluse wheel" (aka cranksaft sensor reluctor ring) is bolted to the crankshaft with three bolts, so it can't "slide" like a ring gear on a flywheel. Sad thing is, it's inside the crankcase, not outside behind the flywheel. Grrr

What did your timing look like when it was warming up, and working ok? Was it still the very high (40+) degrees? Or something more sane...

Matt

This reading was off a snap-on machine.....at idle the timing was negative 7-deg and abt 49 at around 6k. Didnt notice while it was warming up, just at operating temps.

Is the MTH file adjusted for using Nitrous ? I "think" ive read every post in the 4 pages and didnt notice this being commented on. I have had two requests now for nitrous fitted MINI tuner files, one of which i know hasnt had the nitrous fitted yet, but the other has been running fine.

He wont make a NOS program....I tried asking already.

I still am trying to figure out how my timing is at 49*.

This is the main reason why I dont have a NOS system. My friend has NOS and he has a handful of problems. Good luck with the fix!

I'm sorry to hear about everyone's problem with Nitrous...I guess it's NOT so easy horse power after all...after many months of withdraw, the weather was finally good enough this weekend for the afterburners and all I gotta say is HOOOOOYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Still a believer in the M7-Venom

As far as stock timing goes, if you check out my gallery there is a graph of the stock ecu timing and its peaking around 42 at 5200 rpm. It may have advanced more if I went higher in the rpm band, I'm not sure......

When logging the MTH tuner file I have seen an advance of around 46.5 degrees close to redline. My car is no where near the level of modification as yours but just as a comparison these timing advances do occur on lightly modded cars as well. Especially when you only have 91 octane to put in the tank.

Another possibility is crappy injectors.

It may be worth it to yank them and get them tested...

Don't know if it's really a possilbe source of trouble, but if one is sticking closed, or partially clogged, it may show up at high RPMs...

Just a thought...

Def goin in this time but i didnt run the NOS again....It was all done friday nite and i lost a valve which we didnt notice was bad while putting it back together.....Stupid thing is, we should of changed both to be safe on the exh side and that kicked me in the *** when i dropped the other one the 2nd time which took out the plug and melted my new piston. I have another piston comin in tomorrow and all new valves goin in as well on that cyilnder side. Machine shop is coming down in the mornin to measure the bore and check it to see if it didnt get damaged as well which to me looks good but as you all know, i havent ben the best at assesing the problem lately.

Yes Matt....Already on my mind to be safe even though it was most likely the valves which we didnt factor in. I have a bench tester at work for the injectors and will flow them all to be sure this time.

3 times a charm?

I also had some thought about the timing issue.....You figure when the cylinder dropped is when the timing went to 49.5* which sounds right being the dme is trying to comensate for the missing cyilnder....All 3 other cylinders look perfect which makes me believe it was both exhaust valves to begin with in the #1 cylinder.

I think its time to establish NOS Anonymous. Thanks all for convincing me to just say no.

I don't think we're being fair to Nitrous...

Start pumping any motor up to extreem power densities, and sh*t happens. It's not fun when it does, but it goes with the territory. Some twincharges have issues, heck, even some stock motors have issues.

If you want real peice of mind, buy a car and don't do anything... But then you just get the power it came with....

Dr. O,

There's pushing the envelope and there's shredding it to pieces. I'm thinking most back yard mechanics don't have the skills to properly control the NOS beast. Too many parameters and not enough knowledge. A bit different than tossing a couple extra pounds of boost at the power mill.

But that takes the fun out of owning a car.

Trust me.....I will be running NOS again....Im just gonna be much safer this time. And for Sid....Im gonna deck it out with some new gauges.

is just the start of a very fun, addicting, slippery slope! Heck, if you're comfortable in the guts of a motor, go for it! Live and learn.....

It's better than a crack habit....

Sh*t....Other than eating a few head gaskets, valves and a new piston....We can take the head off in about 30mins.

With the amount of money i put into this car, im not letting this little thing stop me.

Yes, I'm in denial...or maybe I just know a few more things...

Dr Obnxos has a point...no horse power gain is easy to obtain or completely fool proof. What ever your choice of poison, you have to monitor the vitals and ramp power up carefully...Beware of agressive timing, monitor your A/F ratio, EGT, AIT...there's never too much information when you're motor's at stake Abusive driving techique can also break the best of machines no matter how well they were built...

Yeah... I'm just working up to it slowly. Last year was the Craptastic tuning, in a couple weeks it'll be the GIAC and 19%er and next year I may build up enough nerve for the laughing gas.
