Drivetrain When do you usually shift your MCS
JCW was 3000. For the N/A cooper 3500, when im on the move about 5500 +/-. There is no use in squeezing the juice out of the cooper engine as there is not that much power above 6K.
Edit: I read that the valves float at 8500

When driving for economy, I shift at about 3000. Accelerating hard I shift around 5,500-6,000--I haven't pushed it farther than that yet.

Usually between...
3500 and 4000 depending on the speed limit. If the engine has warmed up and I'm entering an interstate highway then I usually shift between 4500 and 6000. My gas mileage averages around 32mpg.
Under normal driving, anywhere from 2500-3500. I try to keep the rpm's (especially in the higher gears) above 2k for the gear I'm going to shift into. If the engine isn't warm, I'll keep it below 3k but once its warmed up, I'll let it rip on an onramp up in the 5-6k range. Our mileage is in the 32-34 mpg range.

I shift 3-3500. Sometimes while just in traffic I find my self skipping gears.
Like going from 3rd to 5th. Rpm's only drop 300-400 w/ each shift.
Normal driving : 3500 rpm
Spirited driving : 7200 rpm (MTH Tuner software, rocks!!)
MTH and 15% pulley get a lot nore low-end torque, so I don't need to rev the engine a lot to get power...

PS: I hit 100 mph in 3rd at right around the quarter mile mark ;-). Oh, the fun!

Anybody wants to concurr with this?

Someone did some nice curves on this over at mini2. In a nutshell, on an unmodified S, the maximum acceleration for each gear is roughly between 4000 to 6000 RPM. If you shift to the next highest gear at 6000 RPM, you'll be well within the most efficient powerband--you'll come in right around 4000 RPM in the next gear. It varies from gear to gear, but not that much, and 6000 is a nice benchmark for when to shift so that you're ready to go in the next gear. Above 6000 RPM, you're actually accelerating less then in the next highest gear at 4000 RPM, if that makes sense. Of course, this only applies to an unmodified MCS...

Is there something I am missing here? I am completely stock other than a catback. I only have 30000 miles, and I am wondering if I should take it in and see if there is a problem with something to get such crappy gas mileage.

Dont' worry Aggie--there's a thread elsewhere talking about the OBC and misreading MPG. No one gets 33 MPG in a MINI unless it's parked. Most people are getting 25mpg with occassional excessiveness, and spirited driving around town will garner 23 or lower. If you're getting more than 25 you're not driving your car hard enough, often enough!
