Drivetrain exhaust burble
dont know exactly but understand
it was introduced in 2005 model cars in year 2004...
understand MINI USA came out with a document explaining it is intentional because some people thought it was 'wrong'.
However it is accomplished it was engineered to do it.

In one of the other exhaust threads around here it says the MINI engineered the burble into the MINI. The ECU cuts the fuel immediately after you let off the throttle for a sec to create this burble effect. Correct me if I am wrong?
Its MINIs way of trying to be "cool" by imitating the burble from muscle cars with unspent gasses in the headers. Some ppl think its "cool". I would think the vast majority of average drivers just find it annoying.
British sports cars have always burbled. Triumphs did it, MGs did it, Healeys did it better than any other machine ever made, TVRs did it irregularly and cracked their fiberglass, Turners did it with MG engines and hand made bodies, Elvas Couriers did it and leaked water everywhere when it rained, Jaguars did it expensively, Loti did it and their wispy tube frames shuddered and writhed, Minis did it while whipping around corners on their outside wheels scaring the drivers and the guys in the Ford Consuls they were passing at the same time.
It's what British sports cars sound like. American muscle cars rumble, British sports cars burble on overrun, Italian sports cars snarl and sound like ripping satin, German sports cars clatter and fuss and sound very mechanical.
If you don't care for the sound, you could always buy a Japanese car. They either hiss or sound like a bee farting in a can.

I Love the burble!!!
Actually.... the original Classic Mini's would burble and that's what they "designed" it after. That was another way of MINI incorporating the classic's in the new design... Not at all american muscle, like someone else said, american muscle rumbles.. and can only go fast in a straight line, but thats besides the point... KNOW YOUR ROOTS!

Love those burbles in my '05 MINI! Especially since I installed the Milltek.
FWIW, someone said (Andy maybe?) that there's something the '05s do with the timing when you let off the gas that causes the burbles. I don't remember the details. I just love the sound!

It is BMWs way of trying to keep the spirit of the old Minis alive in the new

And desmo Ducatis sound like all of the precision machinery in the world orgasming at the same moment.
In 1984 my brother got a new VW GTI. Very cool for its time.
It had a burble, we called it bubble back, and is caused by backpressure through the exhaust. We loved it then, and love it now. Car wouldn't be the same without it.

According to Miniusa:
THE CRACKLING NOISE.
When motoring in your convertible, you’ll probably hear an aggressive sort of crackling or popping noise coming from the exhaust. That’s actually been built in on purpose. Back in the day, the classic rally Minis made that type of sound as they raced through Europe. We thought it was only fitting to keep it.
