That Alta smell...

Can anyone identify the Alta smell for me? I've begun to associate it with 'mods', but cannot identify the source. Probably because I've never been around the raw material before.

The smell I'm referring too, is the quite strong 'funk' that explodes out of a box shipped from Alta. At first I thought it was associated with only the Alta intake... But when I got my Alta lightbar, I was greeted with the same smell upon opening the box. I recently recieved an intercooler air diverter/sprayer, and the smell is there again.

WTH causes that smell? I mean, it's not unpleasant, and it's obviously made me associate the smell with  , but I would love to know what it is.

Cancel the order and get a GRS intercoler instead.

Is it that terpentine-like smell? Kind of sharp, and petroleum-based. I think they might use some kind of lubricant (definitely not KY ).

I noticed it with my Alta Catch Can and the Alta CAI (both have silicone parts--- another possible smell source). My Alta 15% S/C pulley that arrived just yesterday had no smell whatsoever... and no rubber, either!

You might be onto something here. We could bottle it, you know. Call it "Alta" and make it into an aftershave or perfume for hardcore rubbers, er, I mean, modders, like us.

OOh ooh That Smell!

Workers overcome by unusual odor at Alta factory. Paramedics were called to the home of Alta Performance products this afternoon as several shipping employees were threated for toxic shock syndrome. Overheard by EMS Larry McDaniels was a comment between two Alta employees, "Woo hee Jack, what did ya eat for lunch, plastic??"

All those affected are expected to make a full recovery, although they may suffer from skin ailments for the near future.

depends on where that stuff is shipped from - i know if i buy cooper rawhide from petfart and it's from "not in the us" it usually smells like pesticide. So maybe some metal eating bugs?

i also agree with the random smell. Its not a bad smell but it is distinct. since I don't smell it while its on the car I really don't care too much. Maybe some sort of bad cardboard or something!

How can you smell anything with your nose stuck up Alta's tail pipe?

Ummm, ok. As someone else mentioned, can't smell anything once the parts are installed and get some fresh air on them, but every Alta box I've goten so far has had quite a pungent odor coming out of it.

Don't know if it's an oil smell. Everything I've gotten so far does include silicone pieces, so maybe it's related to that?

When my Alta CAI was first installed last summer, I had the distinct Alta burning oil smell inside my car really bad. Now after 8000 miles, I still get the smell whenever I drive hard for a few minutes, but I am used to it now. I think it could be the silicon hose causing it. I have looked for any signs of melting on the silicon hose, but it appears fine, so I am not too worried about the smell anymore. However, my passengers sometimes ask about it and I tell them thats what a fast car smells like .
