Drivetrain Your Pulley: What brand? What size(%) and why? Where did you purchase? Satisfied?
Aluminum pulleys offer no advantage in terms of weight, zip, nada. Heat is the issue, along with dissimilar materials, ie. SC shaft is steel. Ask Randy Webb, the expert in this field, why he won't put one on.
Thinking about it all, now that my work schedule has changed and I now have a day or two off during the week. I might reconsider getting the pulley now then waiting for the spring. I was thinking of the 17% as it is between both. Is the reliability just as good as the 15%? Might have to call up helix for pricing.

Webb..
15% Webb. Unless he was yankin my chain at the DC area pulley party my new 15% is a new Webb pulley. There was a lot of chain yankin fun going on though so I need to double check. Installed by Randy with a test drive after
Installed that and a Alta CAI at the same time. Wondered if I would really feel a significant difference. Ah, YEAH. Awesome. Wanted more low end power anf torque. Got it.

Aluminum pulley on a steel shaft is pretty standard engineering practice - I don't anticipate any problem there.
As to warpage, I seriously doubt it - the pulley is hanging right out there in the airstream in back of the radiator. The belt would never last if things got hot enough to warp aluminum.
George at Mini Madness has a lot more experience at this than I do, and this is what he uses on his personal and racing cars.

m7 pulley because of the new size and special coating that cut down heat transfered to the belt and ensured better grip. Don't realy notice increase in power any more.
Purchased from m7
Might be going Alta 19% soon.
James
why am I the only one mentioning the 16% from m7???

The pulley is also different from what it first was, there is no more of that special coating, seems to be bad for the belts Peter says. I threw a belt a few weeks back, but am unsure that the pulley was the cause, I think it was the belt being to tight, I remember being barely able to get it on.
I put a stock belt on afterwards and all has been well since.
James thanks for the feedback, seems like the M7 may just be just a redesign of what the Alta pulley is for no real benefit. I think I‘m going with the tried and true Alta 15%. I want more power but also want the reliability that a 15% pulley would give and it looks like the Alta pulley is what most people are using.
Hope to see ya some time soon at a local MINI run.

Pulley Types
I took off my JCW pulley and chose the M7 16% and an Alta 0% crank pulley. M7 for the 16% reduction and the Alta because of the weight. M7 looks good as well as the Alta, just a matter of choice.

M7 16% - Purchased and Installed by Randy Webb at Charlotte Pulley Party in June. I went with a 16% SC reduction to get a good bump now with a possible +3% crank pulley (for an effective 19% reduction) and GIAC down the road. Am I satisfied? Yes & No. I like it a lot, but I may still want more.
