Drivetrain Exhausts for the non-S crowd
>>Well, compliments of Mini, they used a different engine mount for A/T Minis - the manual Miinis use a smaller one that allows the filter to be used. I assume if you find a smaller filter from K&N, you can use it with no problems. I think Mini will be using a new engine mount in 2005 - but not official.

Ok, thanks!
I guess this limits us to using one of the drop-in filters or doing something custom. Or is there another company making intakes that fit the CVT - anyone?

I got nuthin.
So, I repeat:
Is there any company making intakes that fit the CVT? Or are we limited to using either one of the drop-in filters or doing something custom?

Maybe we need to start a new thread for this instead of hi-jacking chrisneal's exhaust thread?
I also know that Diamini (from Diamond Racing) has a CVT that he claims can smoke a stock S. This gives me hope!!!

I have the exhaust tip that MINI sells, and since it was installed before I took delivery, I really can't say that it makes a difference in sound. Although, I did notice a difference in the exhaust sound when I hit around the 2,500 mile mark. The exhaust seemed to deepen and be more noticeable.
RSpeed Cooper Performance Exhaust video
I know this is already in another thread; I'm just trying to keep all the info together here for the sake of future searchers.
I'm still wavering between the RSpeed and the Remus.

This comment is from a non-technical MINI owner. I've read everything this and other sites have to offer but dropping in a new flat air filter is about the limit of my DIY talents. BUT... I just picked up my Cooper with the Borla exhaust and would highly recommend the mod. I simply love the sound... rumbly but not something to rouse the neighborhood. It makes me enjoy 1st and 2nd gear so much more which is good as I do more city driving than highway. Someone used this description earlier but it fits here: the exhaust makes the car sound like a proper British roadster. No dyno information but I traded in a non-modded Cooper for this one and by the "seat of the pants test" the new Coop is much more nimble.
Not yet. Waiting for a few more to hit the market, and to see some tests concluding real gains. This is the first car I've had that has made me want to tinker with it - it certainly is not underpowered when driven "correctly" hahahaha, but I am curious as to what else can be tweaked without voiding the warranty.
>>I am wondering about the big price differences in exhaust systems. Remus and Super sprint under $400, Borla and rspeed at around $500, and Helix and Rogue well over $500.

>>Anybody know why?
I can tell you why we (RSpeed) did it this way - because we are not trying to make huge amounts of profit off our system. In no way is our system cheaply made - far from it. We have had the experience of developing and marketing exhausts for the Miata for years and we knew that when many of these exhaust came out early for the Mini, many companies would have thier own pricing structure based on a number of factors - including whatever they felt was a decent price for a system - some where high and some were low - regardless, we know we have a great exhaust that does not cost an arm and a leg to afford. It sounds great - it makes good torque and best of all we stand behind it, etc.
Also - I am not trying to speak for other companies here - I simply know what went into our R&D on our exhaust and we knew that we wanted to offer it at a very attractive price structure. I think all the ones you mentioned above are excellent choices - you just need to hear a few to make your final choice.

Thanks Peter,
Any thoughts on an intake that would best match the rspeed exhaust? The vipercross induction system claims an HP gain of 12+ at over $300. Is it worth the extra price over the one you sell? I love the looks of yours.

The Moss one will work fine - we have one on the way for about $79 that will work perfectly with our exhaust. The piper cross is nice, but a bit more complex.

OK, I've got about one thousand bucks left in my car fund after I pay for my MC Red with black top, sport seats, 16 inch wheels to be delivered in April. What is the best bang for the buck.
Right now I like the red anodized aluminium intake from rspeed. $129.95
Thinking about the Remus exhaust. $399 (Thanks for the good review Gabe.)
Maybe Mini-madness sway bar $189.
Red plug wires?
What would others do?

All good choices.
The Green Filter intake is coming soon too (I know I've been saying that for a while - but honest, it's coming!), and I think it may be a bit nicer than the Moss red intake as far as performance, but the looks of the anodized aluminum is hard to beat!
The Remus is a very nice exhaust, and the price can't be beat. The fit is very good, and the sound is a mellow but definitely more aggressive sound when compared to the stock system.
I highly recommend the rear swaybar - the entire character of the car is changed with it (for the better!).
Feel free to contact me directly to discuss any of the options out there. I have tested most of them, and know what works.
Hope that helps!

I will watch for the green filter. What about plug wires. Is it worth the extra money for the Nology wires? I like the "red" look in the engine compartment and I think I saw some less expensive wires somewhere.
Do you supply the remus exhaust?
Andy

Andy,
Yes, the Nology wires are red, but with the Cooper, the Magnacors make a tiny bit more power, and they cost less. The 8.5 Magnecors are red as well. The Nology wires make more power than the Magnacors on the S though - weird.
We aren't talking about monster gains here though - 1-2 horsepower.
I do sell the Remus for the Cooper and S, I just haven't put them up on the site yet (like a couple of other things coming soon).
Give me a call on Monday if you would like to chat.

The short answer on this is that spark plug wires do not make power. I wish they did but we have never seen a car on our dyno that made power with them twhen we started with good stock wires. You can change them if you like the look but do not do it for power. The small gains 1-2 hp that people are seeing can be caused by a many different factors, air temp chance, engine temp and the correction factor of the dyno. But with the same car, same dyno, same day you will get the same hp.

Randy - plug wires do not make HP.

The Remus is a nice exhaust, but you need to cut your old exhaust about mid-way with a hack saw which burns your bridges as you will find it most difficult going back to stock should you ever need to return your Mini back to stock. Just thought people should know that up front. Our exhaust, for example, does not require any cutting and super easy install.
