Drivetrain K&N Filter now available for the Mini Cooper S
I did some searching on the K&N web page and noticed they finally had a part# for the MCS, K&N# 33-2270. I used the K&N store locator and found a shop called Speed Freaks in Cincinnati that sold me the filter for $39.99. It only took one day for it to arrive and the installation was a breeze. I had purchased the BMP kit but I was more impressed with the fit/finish of the stock box and its remote battery post location. Just thought I would pass along the information. I did find the installation was easier by removing the intercooler shield first.
What does/can a K & N filter do for the car? Does the sound change? Can it add a noticeable increase in performance? Does it install on the stock airbox or can you put it in a Madness intake? And if you can put it in the Madness, will the performance increase be even greater????????
Thanks.
Thanks.
The K&N difference is a bit tricky to define. There is a slightly noticeable increase in throttle response, and acceleration increases by a very small margin, but its still worth it. Plus, you never have to buy another air filter. In my opinion, the biggest difference a K&N makes is mentally. If you feel like you're going faster because of it, well, all the better! Ehe. I've put one in every car I've owned. I've found they make the biggest difference in VW New Beetle 2.0Ls and Jeep Wrangler 2.5Ls.

greatgro,
K&N makes two products for the S. One is a drop in panel filter that goes in the stock airbox. The other is an intake called the Typhoon that replaces the airbox.
The panel element gives a very small gain, due to the better flow over the stock element. It also gives a small sound increase, but not much.
The Typhoon makes a bigger horsepower difference, but I haven't had one on the dyno. It doesn't have the heat shield that the others have, so more hot air is being used with its design. I think brand loyalty is what will sell these, not necessarily the product itself. It still is a well made system, with replacement tubes for the intake hoses.
Hope that helps!

Hi folks, Look I have to report that I received an email fromM. Martinez at K&N who says that the Typhoon is ONLY for '02 MCS and that use on an '03 will mess up emissions. Sounds like there is some confusion here. I don't like to see blinking lights on my dash eg "check engine" so am waiting a bit.
