Why is my car so loud with the Alta intake installed?

When I installed the Alta intake, the whine from my supercharger became about three times louder than before. At least I think I'm hearing the whine from the supercharger. Its a really annoying sound to me and anyone who rides in the car. Why does the intake have such a dramatic effect on the noise under the hood? Is there a technical explanation for the change?

that's b/c your car's firewall has been cutout, which lets in more "noise" (or music to others) inside the cabin.

To some its music, to others its an annoyance. If you want it quiet, consider selling it and replacing it with a box like the JCW box where you really dont hear it until 4500 and up.

Its a little too much. Maybe not at the track when I'm wearing a helmet, but on the street I find it annoying.

Then sell it and replace with something like the JCW box.

gobble, most people LOVE that sound! Sorry it's not to your liking. I think the idea of replacing it with the JCW and selling it is a good one. Good luck!

Wow. Personally I thought the car came to life! I don't like loud cars...the sound is really a hidden treasure of a supercharged engine I guess.
Anyways, love it and my Alta CAI is staying for me.
PS: I have to say that I don't like loud Harleys knor abnoxious exhaust systems typically found on Hondas and alike. My CAI and milltek exhaust are a great combo and not very loud I think.

Last night I did a switch.

I recently bought an Alta cold air intake kit with hose.

I had a Maddness intake with notch cut in the metal box for my BMP strut bar. I like the bar and wanted to see if I could keep the intake box with notch and just replace the intake filter and intake to throttlebody hose with the alta parts.

The diameter of the inlet for the alta filter and hose are slightly larger than for the Maddness intake but I clamped them down and they do fit. Since I did not use the Alta intake open rear designed box I kept my snorkel air inlet and I had the airbox mod holes already drilled out in the rear of the air box. This allowed for less intake noise and it sounds just fine to me as is.

Soon I'll get to try it on the track and at autocross.

The sound caused by the intake is far from a purr. I love the sound of a high performance car as much as anyone. I've had a few Porsche's, two RX-7's, an NSX, a trans-am (in high school). To me, a well tuned Ferrari sounds good. A moderately loud exhaust sounds good. The whiny sound caused by the intake does not.

But weren't those RX-7s nothing but whine? They sure didnt rumble with a wankel in them.

I don't remember any loud whine (inside the car) with the RX-7. It was a very smooth power curve with a unique exhaust note.

Well, that kicked-up supercharger whine is something most of us just love, gobble. It's a fun sound and while I don't have the ALTA, I do have the K&N Typhoon CAI (CARB-approved in Cali), and love its sound, especially since I got the ALTA 15% reduced pulley. I've been in many MINIs with the Alta and the supercharger and it's a fun sound to me.

I just think it makes the car sound like a little wind up toy and it causes more clown jokes from my wife.

Perhaps the MINI is really not for you, then, if you care about the clown comments. OR....maybe you need one of these:

do what everyone else has mentioned and get a new CAI.

or try modding the alta cai .. maybe make a custom lid and replace the back wall?

Only options.

ive only had the alta in for about a week.. im LOVING IT.. cant get enough of the winding sound.

Oops! I thought that was 50% of the reason to GET a CAI. The more I press the accelerator the more the CAI whines, the more I press the accelerator, . . .

p.s. It's possible to keep the RPMs low, so as to not spin the supercharger as much, thus keeping the "noise" level low.

How much of a noise difference does the 15% pulley make by itself?

I am looking at the JCW intake with the option of loud or quiet....

thanks!

My Alta CAI is on the way as I type this, ill definitly welcome the increased sound it gives. the car is wayyy to quiet in stock form for me haha I personally think the supercharger whine is sweet. one reason is because there are SO many turbo charged cars out there....and I hate being like everyone else

Gobble did you read up on what the CAI did for the car before buying it?

Maybe i should add my childish comment.

Although increase in everything else is the point... i'd get an intake just for the nice groan I loved the sound of the Racing Beat intake on my miata.
