Drivetrain Is LSD retrofitable on my '05??
Is LSD retrofitable on my '05??
I'm just curious, I'm currently having the JCW Suspension put on my car (like it is still sitting in the service bay
). I hear everyone talk about how there is no wheelspin with it while going through corners. I found (I will get back with you on this) that with my runflats my car would have wheelspin in corners, even if you were just taking a clover-leaf @ 50mph. Like I said I will get back with you this week (when I get my car back), on the new performance that my tires and JCW Suspension give me, and if there is still wheelspin, but with the upcoming, (well, January
), purchase of the JCW Tuning Kit I thought that it might be worth investigating.
Thanks
Mikey

It can always be put in.
LSD can always be put in, but it will cost you. There will be less wheel spin, but it won't totally eliminate it. I have the stock runflats and there is plenty wheel spin. Once the LSD kicks in during a turn it is dramatically difference. I most definitely feel the awesome traction after it kicks in. But like i said it won't eliminate it on all the different occasions. I think it's worth the performance if your willing to fork out the ca$h. I got mine as an option for my 05 Jan build. Hope that helps.

The factory LSD is not retro-fittable at this time. There are however several different LSDs available in the aftermarket. The three major ones, Quaiffe, Phantom Grip, and a Salsbury type, are as good or better than the factory offered unit.
Probably the Quaiffe is the best for most street and race situations as it is an all gear type, no clutches or friction blocks to wear, and as long as both the front wheels are on the ground the power transfer to the wheel with traction is instantanious and seamless.

I'm hoping to answer this question once and for all shortly. I might be getting my hands on an '05 LSD transmission. If so, I'm going to disassemble it, and my '02 and see what the differences are exactly.
It's a moot point though, as long as the dealers aren't selling just that one part. The only way you could get your hands on one would be to get an entire transmission. With the '05 gearing being more desirable anyway I don't see anyone ever doing the swap. Not to mention, I'm sure the OEM lsd would cost at least as much as a quaife.
I'm not sure what the cost or availability would be for the factory LSD at this time. It's going to be quite expensive compared to the option to add it at the time of ordering the car.
The Quaife is about $1100 for the part and about 10-12+ hours for the average shop to install it. Figure $2100+ which is pretty expensive.
The Quaife is "bullet proof" and has a lifetime warranty so if the price of the stock LSD and Quaife is similar and you want to go with a good independent shop to do the install in less time and for a lower hourly rate, then that would be an alternative to having the dealership do it.
If you are mostly just interested in street driving then the cost of adding LSD isn't really worth the expense. It does help if/when you are doing high speed driving on the track.
