First oil change

What milage do I get my first oil change done at? I have about 3,500 miles on the car and the oil service thing says that I still have about 6,425 miles until I need to take it to the dealership and change the oil. With my last car, I religiosly changed the oil every 5,000 miles. Why does MINI want me to wait until 10,000 to change it?

Also, if I change my own oil, how can I reset the oil service thing?

Thanks.

i change every 3k, same thing ive done on all my cars (vette, challenger, mach 1)

its so easy and not that expensive to do, so why take a chance? besides, it keeps fresh oil in your motor all the time!

i don't know a lot but I know that our oil is synthetic so that it only needs changing every 10k miles. Most other cars just use regular motor oil which requires to be changed every 5k. I know a lot of people don't wait till 10k to change the oil but it won't hurt if you do.

As stated by the others here MINI has used synthetic oil, it does not need to be changed until the 10k mark. You can change it early if you want but the synthetic oil will last a very long. As far as reseting the light you do not want to do that as MINI performs other maintenance at that point. The next change or service is at 25K - 15K after the first one, which you will see when you take it in for the 10k service.
