Does anyone have the Kleen Wheels brake dust covers? If so do you like them? What are the alternatives. (besides dirty wheels!). What other brands are out there? Is there a down side to the dust shields? Thanx all.

Bradley,

The big, and it is pretty big, drawback to the dust shields is the lack of airflow available to the brakes. They prevent a considerable amount of cooling to the brakes.

The alternative is a brake pad compound that doesn't make as much dust - EBC Green Stuff I have heard makes less dust. I haven't personally tested these, and I'm actually working on developing pads for the MINI with several manufaturers, but I haven't even considered the dust issue as a factor. It's been all about performance (though I can't imagine any compound other than maybe chalk itself making more dust than the stock pads!).

A couple of people sell the EBC pads - Tire Rack, Mini Mania, and I think a few other of the MCO sponsors sell them. Call and talk to them and see what they say about the dust reduction. I think that's one of their selling points.

Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I've heard that the kleen wheels don't allow fresh air to vent through the wheels as much as the brakes need, and may cause brake heatsoak prematurely (all hearsay).

I know BMW brake pads are the closest thing to spray-painting your wheels "anthracite"; my solution is going to be EBC green stuff pads when I take delivery.
