I'm looking at getting an intake upgrade for my MCS.....I understand the potential benefits, but any drawbacks w/ these instakes (fuel economy, noise, reliability etc.)?

Thanks

I don't know about the Madness intake, but I do know someone with the BMP intake and he complains about bad MPG, down around 20-21. I'm not positive it's filter related though. I get about 23-24 in town with hard driving and a factory intake. Even if it is the cause, the power increase from an aftermarket intake is probably worth a 2-3 MPG loss.

I have a BMP intake. It is my only mod so far. I am waiting to see what emerges as the new stuff gets tested. My butt meter says the car is faster and it sounds better. Driveability and mileage are the same. City 22-24 mpg.

Installed my air intake from madness about 2 months ago and have loved it. As far as fuel goes, I just did a road trip today around 120 miles and it's awesome. I have the computer that gives average mileage among other things. I averaged 42 MPG - no lie. It dropped once I hit stop and go driving.

Messore,

Great question!

The simple answer to it is, no. There are no drawbacks.

The more explained and rationed answer is that the fuel economy should actually get a little better. You are increasing the efficiency. The noise is increased, but I wouldn't even call it noise - it's more like music, and it isn't intrusive by any means. The only time the supercharger volume is noticably louder is when you step on it. There are no effects on reliability at all, and the Madness intake is a work of art as far as build quality (so is the BMP for that matter).

Let me know if you have any other questions abou this mod; I'd be happy to help with your decision.

That MPG figure seems high for a MCS, did you get this figure by computing your MPG manually when you filled up or is the 42MPG figure from the OB computer? The computer is notoriously inacurate (optimistic) at times.

I've also noticed that with my change to the Toyo 205/50-16's, I'm reading 3-4mph higher on my speedo vs. my Garmin StreetPilot. I also ran past a stationary radar (trailer mounted in a construction zone) and got the same differential. I won't be able to depend on the computer for mpg either, but I'm still convinced that improved airflow will improve mpg.

The 205/50/16 's are slightly smaller than the stock 195/55/16's, that's what is causing the discrepancy. 215/50/16's are closer in size to stock but they might be too wide, did you consider 215's?

Great shift from air systems to tires! And it is nice to recognize that the system of a vehicle is just that, inter and intra related. I guess the days of worrying about valve burn with non-stock air intakes are gone. Just a thought but under the intercooler of my MCS is what looks like a relatively chintzy foam pad. Any deterioration problems?? Thanks
