I'd be nice if someone who has access to MCS's with various exhuast systems would record each one in the same conditions and using the same recording device. That way we could get a good side-by-side comparison of loudness and tone of the various aftermarket exhaust systems.

Try this.

It's a comparison of the Borla and Magnaflow, but requires Windows Media Player. I'll have to assemble the exhausts in one place again for a full comparo of the Supersprint, Magnaflow, Borla, Quicksilver, and stock.

It is hard to watch that video clip and sit still! Is it me or did Randy get a wheel off the ground? Either way, that sounds SWEET!

This single muffler system achieves what the others are doing with 2-3 muffler designs. This exhaust system is built for Madness by the London Stainless steel exhaust center. They have over 30 years experience building only stainless steel exhaust systems for the likes of Aston Martin, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Lotus etc.

Key features include:
• Single muffler design weighing half the weight of the factory exhaust
• Refined sound. Quiet on the highway, throaty when necessary.
• Easy install, complete removal of factory system and install of this system takes a mere 1.5hrs without a lift!
• 100% aircraft grade stainless steel construction with a 27 year warranty
• 100% welded construction, no crimping

Volume measurments:
900rpm
Stock 72db QE 74db

3000rpm
Stock 81db QE 84db

5000rpm
Stock 92db QE 92db

Interior
Idle and Rev
Accelerate
Drive-by

I love this exhaust. Tested the Magnaflow and Quicksilver on my car with the dyno. The Magna has a more raspy sound. The Quick is more growl. The Quick is LIGHT!!! The Magna is not. We were seeing the Quick put down about 8-9 vs the Quick's 12-13. That's not far off and the Quick we were testing was pre-production. It didn't have mandel bent pipes, so the production models should see a couple extra ponies...making it a Magna eater. For me, the light and the great power overshadow the Magna's slight power margin.

I like the weight factor, but cant say I like the Boxster "wanna-be" tip. To each his own. Can you get the quick with duelies tips like the others (magna/borla)?

Thanks Ryan. I think you mean the Magna's 12-13, right? I have the install down to less than an hour - but the Magnaflow does fit better (without those barbs). The Quicksilver is light - 22lbs, but the Magnaflow isn't heavy - at 34 lbs (for comparison stock is 46 lbs).

I have done the "pre-production version" also, and it does have mandrel bends. Maybe I have a post-pre-production

I have the Quicksilver available too, and recommend it to those who are looking for a little less agressive sound, and want a very finished (read Porsche) looking tip. It does have a very refined sound.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks for posting the links DavBret.

Tough call as far as sound goes (recording it in a parking garage makes it loud! but nice.)

Just trying to avoid the dread coffee-can sound of every slammed civic in Atlanta when I buy. Here's to hoping someone can put them all together & record in the same conditions. Too bad we can't sample everything first-hand like they can in Denver!

I'm not disagreeing with the numbers, but it seems kinda odd that at 3k RPM the muffle is TWICE as loud as stock, but at 5k RPM, they are the same noise level.

Hey Randy - miss the smiling face in your old sig.

Am I missing something, or is no one discussing the Rogue dual system (different marketing name?)? I really want a reciever hitch (better bike rack option) and other than the custom hitch mentioned in the GRM article, I'm not aware of too many other compatable systems.

mojoey, I'll put it back in just for you!

The Rogue was first to market, and, quite honestly, didn't fit. It also suffered due to the dual outlets on either side, leaving a gaping hole in the center - something most people didn't want.

I won't carry it, but here is a link if you still would like to order it - link.

Let me know if you have any questions about the system and I'd be glad to answer them.

Randy

Thanks for the quick response, Randy. You're about to get my order for the Rogue Intake.

I hate to make my exhaust decision around a trailer hitch, but I'm equally passionate about cycling, so it's just a matter of time before I'm forced to do something. I've had one too many accidents with the piggy-back style bike rack and I'm not about to ruin the looks of my MINI with my exisiting Yakima rack system (not to mention the wind noise/drag).

I can live with the dual tip drawback, especially if the receiver for the hitch lines up with the center cut out. Any idea what the dyno results for the Rouge exhaust are? How about a package deal on the intake/exhaust/hitch???

PM ghillie about a supertrapp that exits out of the side.

I just can't carry or recommend the Rogue in good conscience because of the previous fit issues. The Supertrapp, while it's not really my taste, has been highly touted by several autocrossers, and it side exits.

I don't have a line on a hitch right now, but I'll research it and find out who does. I'll try to post that info soon.

I can give you the intake for $239, which is as cheap as I've seen it anywhere. I also price match - so if you can find it cheaper, let me know.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

A couple of leads on hitches:

hitch1

hitch2

hitch3

hitch4

hitch5

Of these, I am not sure if any other than the Hackers Repair, Rogue and Paul Hacker Autosport (and I thought MINI-Motorsport was a long name) hitches fit an S. I would call and talk to all of them and see. I kinda like number 5. You can still use a stock outlet that way.

Let me know if I can help any other way. The only one of these I have access to to sell is the Rogue. I haven't had any personal experience with any of the hitches though, so I'd be more comfortable if you just went straight with Rogue if that's the hitch you decide on. I like to be able to provide technical support of the product.

Hope that helps!

Randy

Wow Randy - Big help! You keep the same weird hours I do. My major obstacle is the need for a receiver in order to insert a bike rack. I have no plans to tow.

Regarding the Rouge fitment issues, was there cutting or fabricating required?

The Rogue just hits stuff in the back. You would have to redo the whole thing to get it to fit right.

The Magnaflow is definitely louder than the other systems, but mostly at WOT. At 70 or so, it's not bad at all. At 90 it is louder for sure, and I drive about 50 miles to get to the airport, and with the seats down, it gets old. If they're up, it isn't bad at all.

You may want to consider the Quicksilver - I really like this system as well. It makes close to the same power, but it's light. It has a less aggressive sound than the Magnaflow. The biggest drawback is the cost - it's $200 more than the Magnaflow. You could get an intake for that much.

The Borla is another alternative. It has about a thousand pieces (well, 6 actually) and doesn't make as much power as the others, but it sounds very refined, and looks great. The tips are a dual outlet just like stock, but in a larger diameter that really fills out the center exhaust outlet well. It costs $669, so it is reasonable as far as costs go. It is a little more difficult to install than the other two due to the Barbs on the hangers and all of the pieces you have to align just right.

Let me know if I can answer any other questions. The Magnaflows should be getting to customers next week, so you may want to get some other opinions too. There are about ten systems that are going out, so you should have a wider audience poll shortly.

Randy, i think i've asked this before, but I dont remember the answer. If the seats down vs. up makes such a difference with sound, it must mean that a good deal of sound is comming in somewhere behind the seats. Would throwing some dynamat in the boot help with sound reduction in the car do you think?

With my background in racing, I hate adding extra sound deadening because of the weight.

It might help a bit, but I think the reason you hear more noise is really just because you open up the whole car to the back end. Without a partition, the sound doesn't have any barrier except for the glass.

Hope that helps.
