I've put 800km on my MCS and i noticed something that i'd really like to know it that's normal.

When i launch from 1st and i step on the gas pedal, there's a slight delay for the RPM needle to go up....but once it's up, there isn't any delay if a step further down.....i've never had any car hving this problem....

Welocme to MCO Mike and nice pic.

I've never noticed the delay, but next time I drive I'll look for this.

Mike,

Welcome to MCO!

The hesitation may be from those big heavy wheels and tires. The S-"lite" set up with runflats weighs a whopping 50 lbs per corner.

Try out a nice light set of wheels with some regular tires, and I bet the problem would be solved.

Tks. for the prompt reply.

I had 17x8 hamann wheels w/ 215/45 R compound tires. (A048R from Yokohama)
I had this problem w/ stock 17x7" wheels as well.

i hope it'll go away soon.....as it really bugs me....

Even when i put my car in neutral and i rev the car.....it happens too.....it's not from the wheel.

???

Good, more info.

I would take it to the dealer and have them flash the ECU. It sounds like you may have a problem there.

Let me know what you find out.

I had this problem, too - Take it in to the dealership and have them
run the software upgrade. Worked wonders for Winnie, she now runs
smoother in all gears, gas mileage has gone up, and the grin on my
face had gotten even larger...

Just to clarify, and correct me if I'm wrong, but SMG's problem is a physical delay in the tach needle moving up when he revs the engine in 1st. This is NOT the so-called "first gear bog" which is an actual decrease in power to the wheels upon launch in first.

First gear bog is helped by the software upgrade and/or reducing wheel weight and/or various other performance modifications. Duckboy74 refers to this solution.

SMG's problem sounds like an electro-mechanical problem with either the tach or its sensor(s). Randy's right...have the dealer start by looking at the ECU (checking error codes, etc.).

Is there a way (diagnostic?) to find out what version of software I'm likely to be running.

Mine's a 2003, but early. Build date in September IIRC. It runs fine, but if there's a chance of reducing 1st gear bog for free I'll take it!

Ditto; I'm an October build. I don't think I have this pause problem but I'd like to know what Software REV I'm at.

Good question, and I think that there is a way...I just don't know it. There was a thread on MINI2 (and referenced over here on MCO) that was about how to get the codes out of your engine diagnostic system. Lots of button pushing and key turning.

I think an easier way would be to ask your service dept the next time you take your car in. Presumably they can see this info easily when they hook the car up to the diagnostic computer.

But (and this is probably the bigger point), if you have a 2003, you supposedly have the latest version of the software that eliminates the common "first gear bog" problem and the equally common cold start problem. The often-refered to "software upgrade" was something that only effected 2002, early build, cars. Sorry.

The 2002 cars built in late July and on have upgrade 31. All 2003 cars have that same upgrade. Check your build date on the door.

3.2 is for CVT cars, and the newest 3.3 will be for the CVT as well, I'm told by the dealer.

Hope that helps!

the build date on my '02 S was sept 02 but it had pre-3.1 firmware. I recently had 3.2 installed and that is how I found out.

John,

I'll have to chekc with the dealer again. I have an August build, and mine has the newset software for the S.

I was told 3.2 was strictly a Cooper upgrade, specifically CVT. I'll make a call tomorrow and try to straighten it out.

I have an Aug 2002 build that came with pre-3.2 as well. Had the dealer install 3.2 and it did make a difference on the cold start and gave better engine response in general.

just picked up my mcs from bmw last evening.......they said nothing is wrong with the gas pedal or anything......maybe i'm just not used to it yet....

and i just noticed another problem......when i rev the car to 4-5000rpm a few times (in neutral), i heard popping sound from the exhaust, but when i try to show the bmw service advisor, it didn't happen.........what problem can that be?? (never had problem in real life dring tho.....)

That's exactly my experience as well. My Aug 02 build had the earlier software, and I had 3.2 installed by the dealer. Made a definite difference in both cold starting and first gear bog.

I too had this problem but reving up the RPM'S a little more solved it for me. Its that electrnic pedal gadget that takes getting use to.

OK guys, I checked this with MINIUSA bulletins at Ralph Schomp MINI here in Denver.

3.1 is the first CD that corrected cold start and engine software issues. The cars built in late August and after have this mod from Oxford.

3.2 addresses only cars built after 9/02 and only deals with key codes - things like auto door locking functions. I did find that some dealers just received it without the bulletins and had no idea what it was for - so you may have had it installed just because it was the latest and greatest - ?

3.3 will be a Cooper update for cold start issues and some CVT programming.

Talk to your dealers and make sure they know what the software is for.
