Straight through exhaust

I have read many posts about making a custom exhaust where the battery is moved to accomidate for the straight pipe. I was hoping to get a good explanation of what I would need to buy, and what would I need to do in order to make this happen. The Exhausts on the market today just seem to expensive for what they actually are, with exception to the Megan which is getting there.

I would be leary of any kind of straight through exhaust reducing back-pressure and therefore torque. From what I've had explained to me, a reduction in back pressure, like I'd think a less restrictive exhaust would provide, would lead to more very high RPM HP but much less low-end torque. On the MC/MCS this would not be a sacrifice worth making.

Just my two cents.

To fabricate the entire exhaust you would need a flange at the header, all of the tubing, hanger material and whatever muffler and resonator you wanted to run. Cut to length, weld together and devise a mounting bracket at the rear of the car.

Should be fairly simple since there wouldn't be any bends. It's going to be loud though.

I'll eventually be making a 3" straight exhaust, but only after the Mini changes from driver to toy status.

Another messageboard myth rears its ugly head.

Backpressure does not equal torque. In forced induction applications especially it is an evil and most unwanted thing.

Here's mine, when not quite yet done (that's plumbing "tape" suspending the Borla Turbo muffler):

from the rear, after changing the rear control arms...

I can't tell... is there a small resonator in there? or just the one muffler?

Indeed, not the best perspective to see the whole system... It's a SuperSprint center pipe, with resonator. I chronicled the whole build process or experiment over on MINI2, in the Performance forum. It's titled something goofy like 'Muffler of choice for a fabricated exhaust system.' I've posted on it here (NAM) before, like when someone starts such a thread...

TonyB, that looks sweet!
but what did you do to the battery man?
are you using 2.25 all the way out?
did you feel any HP increase?
do you have headers?
is it really loud?

give us feedback that look sweet!

Its not a myth though it may not apply in the case of the MINI. However, often times back-pressure is used as a method to force close valves. In this instance, it is a valuable commodity.

If backpressure is evil in the case of the MINI my little "warning" can be dismissed and I apologize.

WHOA!!!:ee k:!
TELL ME HOW!
seriously, though, I would consider that a lot if it was fairly straightforward (pun intended). Please PM me with instructions, parts needed, and a shop around philly that'll do it!

I'm still at work trying to get a report done...

Just did a quick search and found where I chimed-in here a couple of months back. I provide a thread there to the MINI2 experiment that led to this this exhaust, as well as a few photos to show where the battery is located. Cost is also mentioned, I believe:

an excellent bang for the buck is a supertrapp (well under $200), which can be tuned to give the power peak at different rpms. i ran mine off to the side, but i think one or two people have run them straight out.

My catback is 2.5", an increase over the stock 2.25"... I'll snap a more a recent photo of the battery later... Paul nothing to PM you about that is not already in the provided thread (MINI2). There is more stuff in that long thread than I could ever remember...

Nice job

Thanks for posting.
Is it loud? Do you also have a header or is your's stock?

If I saw this hanging out the back of the starship Enterprise I'd be watching for a couple of photon torpedos to come roaring out the tip.

At WOT, it commands some presence, but really not that bad. I orginally didn't have the resonated SS center pipe, but after hearing it, I decided to get the one with a resonator. It did help to tone down the dbs a bit, and it sort of smoothed-out the note...

I've had this set-up now nearly 2 years, and no one, nor any CA police have ever complained or even taken exception, as far as I know...

Stock header for now... Once I get a head, I'll do a header - probably the OBX, ceramic coated, with the stock cat...

I just took these tonight to better show the battery situation...
