Drivetrain Any experience w/ topside oil changer?
Any experience w/ topside oil changer?
ProMini has a topside oil changer that sounds like it could be a great way to change the oil? Anyone actually have experience with this?
Thanks in advance,
Mike

I’ve had an oil sucker that looks similar (but with a bicycle pump type handle) to the one at Griot’s for a couple of years, but haven’t used it on my MINI yet.
The first time that I used it on my Z3 I pulled the drain plug after sucking out all the oil that the oil sucker could pickup and only got about one ounce more oil. It makes changing oil very quick, clean, and a lot less expensive that going to the dealer.

I've used a topside oil changer since day one with the MINI. Purchased the compressor unit from Griots.
I had it ready and waiting the day I brought my MCS home from the dealer (27 miles on the clock). I immediately drained the nasty BLACK factory oil with it. After it appeared to have sucked up all the oil it could I pulled the drain plug - just to make sure the pan was completely drained ...I doubt a thimbleful came out in total.
Benefits of the model I have are the translucent reservoir with measure lines (you can tell precisely how much oil came out). This is quite useful in monitoring oil consumption. The other is that the whole top portion threads off - easy for cleaning & you needn't poor through a tiny spout.
First time you use it you'll need to figure out when the tube has hit the oil pan bottom, but once you've done it a few times its a no-brainer

I've been using the Griot's pump style for several years now, on several different vehicles. No problems yet! I've heard arguments against them, but none have convinced me to switch yet. The one i hear the most is that it "doesn't get out the stuff that settles to the bottom like slivers of metal, etc." The way i see it, if i've got slivers of metal in there, then i've got bigger problems to worry about!
