Dyno'ed DER MINI!!!

went down to intec racing down here in renton,wa...on a little dyno day...pretty cool got to see some D-1 drift cars...dyno'ed DER MINI for $25 bucks for to runs...hoping to get 180hp at the wheels...but just under...i ran it on 3rd gear...on a DYNORUN machine...came out with:
1st run: 168.7hp and 154.8 TQ
2nd run: 162.4hp and 148.8 TQ

for some reason i didnt get exactly 180hp but happy...for some reason also they didnt put a fan on the intercooler..just the radiator... i am running the 19% pulley from Mini-Madness...Mini-madness header...Mini-Madness intake...Borla Sport exhaust...and NGK iriduim plugs...not to bad i think...but for some reason feels way faster then that....i think now i need to get a ECU upgrade and a intercooler upgrade...and ill be set...

It can't be compared like that.. try it on another dyno and then you would understand.

Having a fan on the Intercooler makes a big difference. I found my best run, with the hood shut and running a very large fan across the hood to cool the intercooler and one lower running across the radiator. With the hood open you are not really replicating any real driving, since 1) no one drives with their hood open 2) you aren't taking advantage of the scoop and forcing air through the intercooler. With the hood open it is just running over the top of the intercooler. It is cooling the engine bay pretty well, but the key is to cool the intercooler more so than just general cooling of the engine bay.

As a way of comparison here is a list of dyno runs that was run last month here in So cal on a Dyno Jet. Now I know a different dyno and different days makes for different outcomes but at least it might give you an idea what others are running. BTW the only real similarity with your run was a cheesy fan aimed at the front grill which sounds like the system they used with you. Here are the numbers which were posted by Minihune under the heading " horsepower myths debunked " elsewhere on this site.

Randy
M7 Tuning

" Some of it was "hard to read" so here's a rough recap-

HP/torque -- Stock or upgraded

281 HP “ElDiablito” “SPI Twin charged and much more”

255.2 HP/233.7 ft-lbs. SPI Twin charged, stock heads/throttle body

210 HP MCS “works” (210 JCW kit,Schrick cam, 17% pulley, porting and polishing of EVERYTHING)

196.2 HP 15%pulley,throttlebody, ported head/intake,Miltek header/exhaust
Madness cold air intake, MTH, wires/coil/plugs, schrick cam

189 HP 15% pulley, intake, Miltek exhaust, throttlebody, MTH, cam?

183 HP M7 MCS- (lots of upgrades)

175.4 HP ‘04 MCS JCW stock

172 HP 15% pulley, Unichip, Throttlebody, K&N filter, Magnaflow

170.2 HP ‘04 MCS JCW

168.2 HP Hedman headers, JCW, 15% pulley K&N intake

168 HP ‘04 MCS Ported head, cold air intake

160.9 HP ‘05 MCS “stock” (very high numbers!)

160.7 HP Alta intake, Magnaflow

158.8 HP ‘04 MCS “JCW intake only”, Zoomer's cat back exhaust

154 HP 15% pulley, Dinan intake

151 HP ‘04 MCS stock

106.8 HP MC stock

------------------

JCW kit MINIs were from about 168.2 to 175 HP at least.
A stock '05 MCS dynoed almost 161 HP!
An MCS with 15% pulley and Dinan intake dynoed in the same range as an '04 stock MCS (within 3 HP).

Conclusion?
There is great variation in measured HP from one MINI to another.
"Hey MINIUSA, Can we have a little consistency here please?" "

also how are some people running as much or more then with the same mods or less....i guess taht fan on the intercooler would make a difference....but it was 25 bucks...give me some options on what to do next...maybe a ECU to get everything working right together????

An ECU would be definitely help...and maybe a better air intake? The madness intake isnt really regarded very highly compared to all the new stuff that came out (or is coming out...AGS)

what intercooler set up are you looking at? Did you ever fix all the ones you bent when "polishing" it? Maybe that has something to do with the low numbers?

i think a better intake will make in improvement, but not a huge one. me and ryephile did some dyno runs in my 04 MCS, Alta, Borla Street and made 165whp. my torque was only 146 tho. it was also extremely cold that night, as in single digit cold, so i might not be too accurate

Again I was just posting this so you might get an idea what other people were getting with their various mods. As for the fan I am sure it would have made a difference but during this test as with yours the only fan used was one in the front grill. As for what mods may help you an ECU should certainly help. There are many sources of info on this board and I am sure many people eager to tell you what to do. Good luck with your project.

I am not sure which tupe of polish you are referring to. Are you referring to a inside polish with perhaps HP gains or a exterior for appearance ?

you get upset with randy for posting those dyno numbers and then go and ask a question like that?

look above you will notice
210 HP MCS “works” (210 JCW kit,Schrick cam, 17% pulley, porting and polishing of EVERYTHING)

That mini is owned by NAM member D1JL and it is one of the Steve's Auto Clinic regulars.

Can you give us more on your specs - like to see the $$$ value setup. If we're talking 1/4 mile times here - I imagine it's way cheaper using NOS.

Several weeks ago at AMVIVII I had Randy install a 15%, Alta cold air intake, Densos, and a Miltec. We were at Dynojet and My 2004 MCS stock dynoed 159.5WHP and 180WHP after the mods.
