Anyone running the JMTC K04 GT Dominator on a stock (unopened) N18 engine?

Hey everyone,

I’m currently tracking my 2012 Mini Cooper S (N18, R56) and considering installing the JMTC GT Dominator K04 turbo from Mini Mania. To my understanding, it’s the largest drop-in option available, and I’m trying to determine if it’s feasible to run safely on a stock bottom end - for now I’m have no plans to rebuild the engine or install forged internals.

So far, I’ve installed the following supporting mods:
  • AEM CAI with hood funnel + M7 Speed high flow intake hose
  • Wagner competition intercooler
  • M7 Speed hot/cold side boost tubes + oil catch can
  • Forge BOV
  • Slightly larger hood scoop for better airflow to the intake
  • Catless 2.5" Milltek exhaust, downpipe + exhaust (will upgrade to 3" as required)
  • NGK one-step colder plugs + Bosch upgraded coils
  • Stage 2 tune (will obviously retune for K04)
Additionally, I plan to get these additional mods within the next few weeks:
  • Oil cooler ( either HEL or Airtec)
  • New oil feed line (will install at turbo install time)
  • LSD and upgraded clutch
I’m fully aware the Dominator requires:
  • Full 3" exhaust from turbo to tips
  • I likely want to put an additional step colder spark plugs
  • High-flow intake (already have it)
  • ECU tune specific to the K04
  • Race fuel (100 octane is what I am thinking - so I can use my existing fuel system)
My questions for anyone with experience:
  1. Has anyone here run the Dominator K04 on an unopened N18? If so, how has it held up long-term?
  2. If not, do you think this setup is theoretically feasible for safe, track performance?
  3. Beyond what I’ve already installed or plan to upgrade (3” exhaust, clutch, oil cooler), are there any other essential mods I should be considering?
  4. Any tuner recommendations familiar with this turbo and platform?
I’m not chasing dyno numbers, I want a build that’s reliable for regular track use, even if that means dialing down peak power.

Thanks in advance!

Talk to @Lou@Prototype-R about tuning and hardware.

My thoughts are: if you’re not building for high horsepower, don’t get the biggest turbo. If you’ll be doing regular track use, get the turbo that will give you broad power and linear response. An OEM JCW turbo or the Borg Warner Airwerks turbo. Either of those will work great on a stock Cooper S N18 engine. You won’t lose the low end, but you’ll gain power up top.
