Here's what I'm working with: 06 MCS manual. 155k Minor mods, no racing, no track. Mostly just a DD.
Currently have the DM flywheel that looks to be in decent shape. I can buy a replacement LUK clutch kit for $120 on Amazon.
I had a light SM flywheel in my E39 and sounded like a tractor. I totally hated it. Don't want that again. Am I on the right track or should I be looking at something else?
I wish I could tell ya more, but I havent had the chance to test the clutchmasters stage 2 kit with thier steel flywheel its not DM set up like stock, I didn't go with the aluminum one. It is a little lighter but not like the aluminum one would be huge difference in weight.
My guess is that the noises you got from the single mass conversion are due to the light-weight version you went with. I have a ClutchMasters single mass in my R55, but I went with their steel version. The steel version is just about the same weight as the OEM dual mass, and I don't have any issues with noises that weren't there with the OEM dual mass piece.
In your case, and with your requirements and driving, I would get a new dual mass flywheel. Also, don't skimp and not replace the clutch disc and pressure plate. Considering the work involved in getting to it, its cheap insurance from having to redo the job in a coupe months.
I'll add here that the dual mass flywheel does have a service life. Looks like you (or previous owner) took care of the clutch, based on the condition of the disc. But the springs in the flywheel can wear out, and cause the flywheel to lose some of its shock and vibration absorbing properties. Again, cheap insurance when you consider what's involved in getting to it for replacement .
I'm running an fx lightweight flywheel and atsfe 1x clutch and a stage 2x in my other mini..
I absolutely LOOOOOVE the feel of them..imo I suggest giving them a look. Just because they are mainly marketed on ebay doesnt mean a thing.... i researched them long n hard befor i tried one.. then i loved it so much i removed my perfectly fine , relatively newer clutch in my other car then to put an FX in that one too..
BTW, single mass flywheel chatter with low throttle input and low rpm BUT it has no negative effect on the clutch. Mini mainly uses a 2x piece for easier drive ability as itle hold revs longer because it's so heavy and it's a 2x piece so it can be slipped more and not make make a that horrendous chatter noise..after just a month if driving mine , I haven't chattered em once since. You learn how to drive the lighter 1x piece flywheel quick...
if you chatter it and can't help but drive that way then a 2x piece NON lightweight flywheel will be better suited for you.. you can still put an upgraded clutch on that type flywheel too ...luk is a good 2x piece flywheel to go with..it's what I had and removed for my fx and that Luk was holding my power levels juuuuust fine. ( my cars in the 90% built , its a runner)
