Air-Oil Separator vs Catch Can?

Anyone have experience installing an air-oil separator vs using a catch can? In my mind, an air-oil separator looks to be much more efficient....

I'm looking at plumbing in one of these:

We have some people on our MINI Discord saying that certain oil catch can kits are too restrictive abd can result in blue smoke and a bad time. Personally, waiting to receive a Mishimoto OCC
