Yup, it's loud, and yes the pshhh type noise is normal. Hop out when the engine is idling and listen to it, it sounds like an open faucet

Wow

I never knew that the intake turned the microscopic little 4-banger into such a lion! Anyone know what the 15% or 19% pulley does when thrown into the mix?!!! I imagine that the sound would be nuts!

what ive been getting a buzz from recently is say starting off in 2nd with the accelerator being floored - it makes a crazy whizzing/hissing noise

that could be me cooking the engine but hey sounds cool

I had a "buzz" too. Found that the intercooler cover bolts were backing out. Loctite fixed that. It did sound cool, though..

I just put on a 19% today- even with the stock air box, it howls like a banshee when it's wound up! It'll be a while before the dumb grin wears off after this evening's post-install test drive. I'm waiting to see what M7 has on the way for a CAI before I add one...

The HK is nice, but now it'll be turned on even less often!

Another satisfied user of the Alta CAI and 15% pulley for 22K miles. The sound is addicting. I just had the MTH flash this weekend and put over 300 miles on the car to get it to adapt and now have a great new sound. The rev limiter is now moved up to about 7200 RPM and just before 7K the combined whine of the supercharger and roar of the stock exhaust is just beautiful.

Ditto.

Next, get a catback exhaust for more delightful sounds.

I had an Alta 15% pulley installed at the same time as the CAI and recently dyno'd 189.1 at flywheel.WHEEEEEEEEEE.Actually ,I have ordered a K&N filter to try to cut some of this noise down.(RU-3610,$58.35 with shipping)

I'm not sure if the K&N will cut down of the noise but, it has been documented that the K&N doesn't flow as well as the Unifilter foam that comes with the Alta CAI. You may lose some hp with the K&N.

It does its job of filtering much better than the Alta foam and is safer for your engine, my suggestion would be to get that foam out of there asap.

ALTA cai

I've driven close to 26,000 miles with an Alta intake and 15% reduced pulley. I don't think is loud but it lets you know is there. Like the milltek catback exhaust system it isn't loud but lets you know is there. I hear two different sounds come out of my induction, one is like when you take the top and air filter elemnet off a carburated engine. That sound happens say cruising in 6th gear at 2800 rpm's and you step on it a little (not floored) to pass a car. The second sound is a whine wistle type wich must be the supercharger at wide open blowing the doors off a wrx or a 1.8t The alta intake was my first mod, I felt the car get smoother and gained an avarage of 3 mpg better fuel efficiency. The pulley was my second mod, that got rid of the bogg taking off, negated my fuel conservation gains from the intake and put a grinn on my face that hasn't gone away yet. I waited 23,000 miles to get my second wave of upgrades. The second wave brought a milltek catback, mth software and kosei k1 wheels with falken tires. All this modifications have contributed improoving driveability and made it more enjoyable for every day driving. My 2003 mcs had a serious case of the stumble and low power feeling taking off from full stop. Thanks to this comunity my mcs is what it should've been from day 1. Thanx all.

Folks we all love our MINI's but let's stop pretending they're something they're not. A Cooper S, even at 190hp, is not going to 'blow the doors off' a 227hp WRX (yes, I know the WRX weighs more), or a modified 1.8t. Stock 1.8t vs. 190hp MINI, the MINI will probably be able to beat any of the cars currently offered with a 1.8t. Similar power (180 vs 190), but the MINI is going to weigh a little less. It would be close. Certainly not 'blowing the doors off'.

Rule of thumb with the MINI is that unless you're running a 245hp Stage III kit, if you think you just 'blew the doors off' something really fast, he probably wasn't trying. That being said, the MINI is still way more fun and I'd take it over any car any day .

I agree! When I read that he was blowing the doors off a wrx, I was puzzled.
I run about 210 hp and have a hard time getting away from quite a few cars. Last night it was a struggle to keep some kind of SAAB behind me. It's always a bummer when reality sets in that our MCSs sound and feel faster then they really are. Looks like a new head and cam for me now ... I hate reality!

Hehe, don't look at it as a bummer, just know that what matters is how it feels. That Saab may have been the 9-2X, which is a WRX in sheep's clothing. That would explain it for sure. There aren't too many around but they're out there.

Which is not to say you shouldn't mod to your heart's content!

I must agree as well. A 1.6 liter, FWD car is not the best starting place for gut-wrenching power...

I didn't get my MCS with the intention of blowing others off the line. Now, 70 to 100, keeping speeds in corners (being able to late-brake, or not at all) and quick transitions are a different story .

Can you back that up with hard evidence? Not trying to bust your *****, just want to find out the truth.

No, just personal experience. I'm sure an engineer can chime in with empirical data as to why cotton gauze does a much better job of filtering air than foam. The problem with the foam is that it permits small particles of sand and grit to pass through the filter, I used to be a pro-foam guy too, until a veteran mechanic who has extensive experience with twinturbo Nissan Zs pulled one of those green HKS foam filters off a customers car, set it on a white piece of paper and hit it a couple times with the palm of his hand. A bunch of small sand -sized particles fell through the "filtered" end, from then on I've been anti-foam.

Is it just me or does Scooby's pictured Alta intake not look installed right? The partition between the intake and the cowl area is still there. Look at Ryephile's picture, that's what mine looks like.

Also the intake along with a 15% pulley is a real kick in the pants

Oh Yes It Will... I did it:smile: Rolling start (about 10mph) to the line, we both jumped on it at the same point & time. Through 5th. I pulled him about 2.5 car lengths. After shifting to 6th. it looked like he started closing the gap to 2 car length but, then we both had to shut off due to closing on other cars And thats the truth

Forgot to add, not only does the wrx weigh more, driveline loss about 25-27%. That works out to between 170 to 166 whp. Doesn't take a bunch of mods to get that out of a lighter mini.
