Stock intake Mod

I was sitting in frount of my mini the other day and was wondering if anyonehad thought about this to. The stock intake on the S sits right behind the hood up away from direct ait flow. Has anyone come up with a way to get more air into the intake? For instance on the evo 8 they have a exstetion that fits on the stock pipe to put the intake in behind the frount grill. i was thinking that this would be great. also does anyone make a set of hard pipes for the s intake to replace the ruper and plastic ruff bumpy pies?

that is all

Check out the Dinan website, they have produced an Intake box that ports air from the vent in front of the windscreen, for more pressure and cooler air..

The stock box does port air from behind the grill already!

Go and take a look at your MCS, it has an intake that's ported from the front grill.

If your's doesn't, then panic! LOL

You know that there is a ram duct in the front upper grill to the bottom
of the stock air box, right?

Well i understand that but it is behind the hood not in the direct path of the air flow.

even though the grill slats are angled upward, i think miniracer is is right. the dynamic pressure available from the direct airstream has been lost by the time the air enters the plastic inlet thingy. i suspect this is the reason they don't care about the sharp flow turn right at the mouth of the inlet; they've already lost the dynamic energy available from the air.

but at 60 mph (=88 ft/sec), the dynamic pressure isn't all that much, .06 psi. this pressure varies as the square of the velocity, so by 100 mph, you could be gaining .18 psi with a true ram air inlet.

i did a calculation a while ago that showed, if i recall correctly, at WOT the air was moving about 60 mph inside a 2.5" dia tube. so there is still room for improvement by avoiding the losses of that whole convoluted path back and forth to the throttle body. these stock pressure drops may still be small (i think andy or somebody measured them at much less than 1 psi total), but you could pick up a few hp with a good inlet.

it doesn't surprise me that the hai shows gains, because it has the best path. i don't buy any of the other inlet hp gain numbers unless they ran the test with the hood CLOSED AND a large volume of air blowing at the front of the car.

Alta offers an optional silicone hose with their intake kits that replaces the stock rubber piece.

Well, someone came up with the idea to drill holes in the plastic separator between the airbox and the space under the grille just below the windsheild. I know the directions are around here somewhere.

Dave,

All the pics are "X" in that thread, due to site migration, I suppose. Do you know where we might find them, or can someone repair the links?
