Could you elaborate on your problem?

As far as I'm concerned, you need to push with some force to the left and then up to go into reverse. For first gear you lightly push left and then up or diagonally to the top left corner towards 1st.

Sorry if I'm sounding like a douche! Some people call cable companies asking why their TV isn't working when it somehow got unplugged!

Also, is it a manual or a CVT?

So are you saying that it's impossible for you to go into reverse without going into third and second before?

I'd search for any problems with whatever brand the clutch is online.

I've never heard of this problem and it sounds very strange to me. If worst comes to worst, you can take it to a specialized mini/ bmw mechanic and explain your problem.

I do not know much about which cables move for which gears, but maybe it is a shift linkage or shift cable problem.
realoem and penskeparts have part schematics. Do you have a Bentley Repair Manual?
Here is an image from realoem but probably does not have the detail you need:

It could be a problem with the linkage, in that case it has nothing to do with the clutch, but only if it is the linkage, I had to replace my linkage system about 5 months ago, it was VERY hard to get into 5th and 6th.
Hope you get it resolved!
