i want ot finally get my pulley within the next month. but like anybody i want to make the right decision. now i did a search and couldn't find anything. so can somebaody explain to me which pulleys on the market are either interference or taper-bore style, and the pros and cons. And also, how much does it really matter what material or combo of materials, the pulley is made of. which pulleys are made of what?

Thanks in advance,

discodan

Sorry, but you didn't search very hard.
In my casual observation:
Interference fit is a thing of the past - issues with heating up the shaft and it's possible effects on the shaft seal/internals.
Because of the relatively small diameter of the pulley (and thus low inertia), I would say a steel pulley (Alta, promini) would be preferable, vs. aluminum, but Helix has a steel taper and aluminum pulley, and I haven't seen complaints of wear.

The below comes up on the first page of a search on 'pulley' in the performance mods section:
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...mp;topic=26508
and
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...mp;topic=26594

(so how do you condense the damn URL into a tiny little link?)

thanks for your response Eric, but those links you gave me don't really answer my initial questions.

i talked with a few people; minimania, alta, helix13 and randy of webb motorsports. the alta seems to be the favoured pulley. all stainless steal, best fit. there are many threads on the subject otherwise just get on the phone
hope this helps.

discodan,

The quickest way to get an answer is to call eric at Helix13.com
1-877-HELIX13 it's toll free. Call monday morning and he can give you the low down on all options because he sells them and installs them.

Your best bet is the alta design stainless steel pulley
http://www.altaminiperformance.com/p...ey/PULLEY.html
HELIX13 sells a steel/aluminum pulley type similar to the Alta design. Both are durable (doesn't really matter on materials) and easy to install.

clarification:
the taper-fit, clamp on pulleys sold by Helix are both parts stainless steel;
the interference fit style has a steel hub and an aluminum pulley. (This style is being phased out simply because it is trickier to install.)
Both styles can be had in 15, 17 or 19%; the interference style can also be fitted with a stock size aluminum pulley should you wish to go back for competition class reasons.

if the parts bolt together, it is fine to use different materials.
if there is an interference fit, it is a better idea id the hub abd shaft are the same material.
Aluminum for the pulley surface has shown virtually no wear issues.

stainless (and aluminum, for that matter) has the only advantage of not corroding

ditto...
I purchased my 19% from Helix after a few conversations with Eric. He was friendly to talk to and no pressure on sales.
He is very knowledgeable on the subject and has performed numerous pulley installs.

thanks everybody. i think i'm going to go with Helix. i was getting confused for a while because i remember a thread here that someone said that the Helix pulleys and the Promini pulleys were made by the same company (P&D?) just that the Promini was engraved and painted. the Promini pulley is listed as being all stainless so that was the clarification i was looking for. i have talked to Eric before and yes he is a great guy. i will set up an appointment for next month, thanks again all.

Randy Webb did mine in Vegas... Alta pully, Alta intake, and throttle body. Big improvement.... dyno showed 170 HP at the wheels.

Just did Milltake catback, rear sway bar, control arms, lowering springs (all H-sport).

Have stage one brakes and Unichip ECU to install and also intercooler diverter.
