I know there are at least 4 different manufacturers for pulleys and they all have "the best method of installation".

i'm looking to do this myself, as i am nowhere near a tuning shop. and i don't really want to get into heating the supercharger shaft to install this SO...
what are my options.

everyone probably feels that their pulley is the best, but i'm looking for reliability (not throwing or eating belts) first and foremost then in order of importance #1 --ease of installation, #2 -- ablility to return to stock, #3 --ability to upgrade in the future.

thanks

use a interference fit....
not really posibel unless someone makes an interference fit stock size(i think there is a heat fit, but would stay clear of that style)
once agian if its an interference fit not that big a deal, the hardest part of swapping pullies is getting the stock pully off once thats done swaping inbetween is rather easy

Yes. Talk to Eric at Helix13.com and ask about a pulley that can have various sizes so that you can change them if needed. 15%, 17% and 19% are available. Pick two and start with one. Or drive to a pulley party and get it installed for about $400. The 19% pulley needs a smaller belt while the 15% doesn't.

Once you remove the stock pulley you cannot really restore it to stock version. All of the upgrade pulleys are smaller than stock.

Have fun.

Actually, Mini Mania offers factory size pulley for anyone who's using Mania's 3-piece reduction pulley and wants to revert back to stock spec.

Factory diameter pulley.

OK, factory sized stock pulley is an option (still voids your supercharger warranty to doing the install) and good for those who want to autocross in stock class after upgrading pulleys.

Are you sure??? There was a thread on hear a little while ago and someone was flipping out b/c they called MINI Mania and they said they aren't making any pulleys except for 15% and had no plans to make other sizes. And this person was peeved b/c they bought the Mania pulley specifically for the purpose of switching pulleys.

that is the sort of thing i want to sort out now. soooo...
looks like 1 vote for minimania and 2 for Helix and 2 for alta.
none for mini madness?

like i said in the original post, ease of install. i'd rather research this now than spend a weekend mounting and aligning a pulley on the supercharger.

thanks for all the input everyone

i look forward to more zip in my S

According to their website, they still carry the factory diameter pulley. It might be a good idea to give them a call to find out for sure.

OlYeller, are you doing the installation yourself? If not, what might help you determine which pulley to install is the location of the tuner. It would be easier if any problem arises in the future. I believe the closest to you is Turner Motorsport.

207 Elm Street
Amesbury, MA, USA 01913
PHONE: 978 388-7769

On the other hand, if your local dealership does installation of the pulley, that would be ideal. In which case, you can choose any pulley.

will mini peabody install an aftermarket pulley for me??
it never occured to me that the dealership would do the work.
I'll keep the address for turner motorsports---Thanks

btw- does changing the pulley void the warranty on the whole engine or just the super charger, OR the entire car. -just curious.

maybe i'll give Hrach a call Mon and see if they'll do it. - and for how much :???:

i was going to do it myself to save a 3.5 hour drive each way to MA and back.
i figured i could have the thing installed in less time than it would take to get there!

looks like the minimania $160 + $1.00 for pulley puller rental! and the Alta $110 are the only two that don't require that the new pulley be pressed on OR heated on.
so i'll probably go with one of those two.

any additional input is still welcomed - i won't order till monday.

It all depends on the individual dealership.

Again, this issue is dealer dependent. The dealership here in Portland, OR only voids the supercharger.

As far as I can tell, every new pulley out there is the taper fit design, meaning no heat-to-fit. Helix, promini, alta offer taper fit for sure. The original P&D pulley was the heat-to-fit (interference fit) design: steel hub, screw-on aluminum pulleys. Any pulley replacement involves removing the stock pressed on steel pulley, and the best way is to get the special puller. There are a couple of drill jig devices out there, where you drill through the stock pulley hub to relax it's grip, but the is not a method I would use. In any case, the stock pulley is probably not re-useable, as the puller may deform it slightly (and it spins at 15,000 rpm!)

If you want to go back and forth to stock, the Helix/P&D heat-to-fit hub allows fairly easy swapping to stock, 15%, 17% and 19%. If you want to go back to stock with a taper fit, it is do-able and only slightly more difficult, although I haven't seen any stock taper fit pulleys out there. A problem with stock T/F is that they all are machined from a solid bar of stainles steel and the stocker is a piggy. The heat-to-fit design uses a smaller steel hub, but the screw-on pulleys themselves are aluminum.

I've swapped my 15% to a 19% Helix/P&D pulley and it took about 1/2 hour. The only tools required were a belt tensioner tool (~$50 from MINI), an allen wrench, and a small screwdriver (to lock the compressed tensioner in place). No jacking of the engine was required for this swap, since the pulley hub had already been installed by Helix.

Actually, under the Magnuson-Moss Act, the dealer must prove that the modification is what created the problem that you are trying to have resolved under warranty. There is a tad more info on MINI2 here:
