Seems like a lot of people are either drilling holes or making slots like this. I think i'm going to do this to mine.

You could always drop $75 on this one from Craven. I really want one but just cant justify the cost to my wife right now for a dipstick.

Might try to do this tonight while the car is down. What measurements did you use for the gaps? Does it corespond to any type of oil increments?

Great idea! Just make sure you don't dremel it too thin... if that snaps off say bye bye engine!

What is so difficult about reading the oil level? Even with clean oil I can easily see the oil line. Its only reliable if the engine has been sitting. I have found that if I want to feel really confident about the oil reading I take the dip stick out and wipe it off. I only push the stick down 3/4 of the way in the tube. I then come back in the morning and push the stick all the way down and pull straight out. Easy to read.

If I was the dealer and I saw this modified dipstick I would be like, WTF...

I just ordered one of those for my wife's MINI and I'm going to give it to her for a present - I hope she likes it.

I've never seen that red one in the OP's post before - is that on newer models and/or only MCS's?

Mine's a 2007 base model, and it has the wire-wound one that is absolutely impossible to read, no matter what (new vs. old oil, hot vs. cold, pressing onto a paper towel, etc. etc. etc.), and would not take kindly to modifications...
