I would like to upgrade my intake and its getting confusing, It seems that it boils down to looks and name brand or am I wrong. The 3 that I have narrowed it to are the Pilo, BMP, and the Alta. I think the BMP wins on looks but what about performance, Are they all the same? and what whould I expect when I do change it out? Thanks

My two cents worth.......if you want ultimate better air flow, go without a filter (kind of risky but there you have it)......second best is a K&N DRY filter, i.e., no oil in it.....
if you're gonna oil an aftermarket filter, I don't care what kind, the small gain you get over stock will soon wither away (within 2-3K miles) and then you wind up with more restriction of air flow than with stock.
PLEASE, no flaming....THE OPINION hereby expressed is just that, an opinion based on a few centuries of experience.....but an opinion nonetheless.

After pulling out my OEM filter to install my K&N panel, I would _NEVER_ run without one! the K&N is really great for the price. 1/2 - 1/3 of the price of other options and it really made a difference in MPG. Should be even better after i modify the airbox to let more air in from the cowl vents.

Agree! I have been using K&N's on my other cars (they both have a V-8 but that's another story) and here in the desert (So. Nevada) it's really dusty and the paper type filters die long before they are supposed to. It was one of the first things I bought for my new MCS. They will last forever and you can clean them yourself whenever you like. I prefer to clean with mine every other oil change on the other cars. I'm not sure about the long oil change intervals MINI reccomends yet so I'll have a look at it every 4-6 months and see how it looks.................mgg

I measured the pressure drop across my stock air filter as 0.14 psi at peak rpm and WOT when my MCS was making 165 whp. That's about 1 hp gain if all of the planets are aligned correctly. Not worth it to me compared to the risk of engine/supercharger wear and damage from ingesting foreign particles.
