Why no iphone/android based programmers?

It seems like this would be the perfect platform to create a performance programming app. I've seen the apps Torque, Dashcommand, etc for monitoring and logging data, so I'm surprised there hasn't been development of a programming app. I know each vehicle manufacturer uses different software, but is there some major reason this hasn't been explored yet?

I do iPhone/Android dev for living and wouldn't trust the devices for reprogramming my car's ECU. I cringe to think what would happen if you received a phone call at 50% of the write process!

But couldn't the app disable cell service/wifi/bluetooth connections while programming? With all the apps available, just seems like it would be something one of the major programmer manufacturers would work on. With the quantity of smartphones available, the consumer already has the hardware, just need the software.......and the harness.

I think there is a lot of complications with it beyond just software and a harness. Like sspreso said, the platforms are a little too unstable still to try and test them with something that can brick your car's ECU. The number of times my iPhone crashes running apps is disappointing still.

As do I, Have any experience with working with OBD readings? Really have the desire to make a better iPhone based gauge/obd code reader and eventually port it to iPhone for cheap/free but could never tackle the reading of the OBD side of things.

I've tried reaching out to the makers of the Kiwi wireless ODB reader, but haven't had any luck getting access to their SDK. Obviously there is one give the handful of apps like Rev out there.
The data feed from the ODB is based on a SAE standard, so it just a matter of figuring out the data strings. Thats how the ScanGauge guys are doing it.
Been wanting to look into daisy chaining and ODB to serial with a serial to 30-pin iPhone cable and see if anything is coming across a port.

Yeah I'm using rev now with decent results. Just extremely disappointed in the lack of updates to the app. Want to create my own that functions essentially the same and just looks better and costs less. Tried reaching out to Kiwi as well about their SDK but had no luck. Maybe we can team up and work on something open source or something?

Hmmm maybe we should My kid brother was asking why I haven't done a data logging app yet, lol.

I've stopped doing much of my side development because I don't have much time with my office job (which is mobile app based too). But having another person makes it much more reasonable/realistic.

Think of all the data that could be displayed with an iPad! Flipboard but with car data!

I was thinking about the iPad too. I'm just so displeased with the UI/design of all the current OBD apps that I want to just make a better one for everyone. Made by people who actually have cars. (Don't know if the same can be said by those who made the current offering.)

Either way PM me and maybe we can figure some stuff out.
