Sounds fun! Personally, I would just get a subaru if you want AWD. You might want to actually look into their set up as well, since they are either FWD or AWD models. It will be more like the setup you will need to convert yours from a FWD to the AWD. Don't know though since they use the horizontally opposed engines.

This is the most extreme conversion I know of:

You might be able to swap the system from a subaru, their models are turbo charged. Going to need a lot of custom work though, and a lot of funds.
If you have that amount to spend, it is your money so it is up to you.
You might want to get a Nissan GTR though, just saying

Note: To see more of the Mini above, google search Hemi Mini, there is even a youtube vid.

R53 was never set up for this....
Awd...
Outside of making it a full on rally car...don't think it gonna work without major work and fabrication ...think new floor for a drivshft, moved fuel tank and new floor to fit a rear diff...if you can get a transfer case...and the hp...
would love to see it done for less than $40,000.

In a nutshell, the end result would be a custom car with a mini body...but no real mini left.
Good luck, have at it. If go have the $$ to spend on parts, labour, and research, great, folks need jobs!!

You have the same problems to overcome as with every engine swap into a MINI, space and the computer interface. The engine compartment in a MINI is tiny, it's tight with the MINI engine in there, let alone anything bigger. Even the Countryman stuff won't fit, which is why there's a Countryman. (it's physically a lot bigger than a MINI hatch.

If I were going to do this I think I would go with Honda CRV stuff, there are a gazillion Honda tuner shops out there and there is every upgrade in the world available, so you could get huge HP and the CRV already is a 4wd system, all you'd have to do is make it fit - but that's the hard part! Use all of the ecm from the Honda or an aftermarket setup.....

The Neon wasn't AWD, was it?

You might also consider doing a "Twini", adding a engine in the rear to get AWD and lot's of HP.

If you're not doing the work yourself, you could spend as much as that R8 doing this, just FYI....

Getrag developed an all wheel drive setup for the R53 and presented it to MINI. They did not go for it sadly.

Well, it's possible to do anything given enough time, engineering expertise and money, but are you talking about making a FWD into a RWD? Cause I can't think of any way to successfully do that, save doing what they did with that MINI racecar. For that one they basically used the MINI body over a tube frame racecar that used a BMW drivetrain, front engine, rear wheel drive.

Or are you thinking about making the MINI rear engine and RWD?

It all comes down to how crazy you want to get......

I don't know how far along they are, but Think Mini is working on an AWD R53. The donor parts are VAG, including a Quattro trans. They also worked out the computers from the Mini and VAG communicating to each other.

I think the easiest way would be two electric hub motors in the back, some powerful batteries, and a slick controller.

his comment gave me some inspiration. Contact Prodrive. They are the people who build the ralley spec countrymans. They may be able to source the parts and do most of the custom work for ya.

3. im sorry, but its fairly outrageous of you to Flaunt your (supposed) "unlimited cash flow" by making these ridiculous comments about modding a car.

finally, if you wanna do 4wd, get a countryman, those are about as close to 4wd as possible, get a turbo version, and beef that up...
The R53 is in every way you can imagine better than the R56 engine. I dont know why you wouldnt ever want to use that engine especially if you want to gain hp.
