Drivetrain all wheel drive/ engine swap!
you could do a space frame chassis with mini body work, there is an old school mini floating around the web with audi a3 engine and the quattro drive line (2L turbo). anything can be done just depends how much money you want to spend. just my .02$
Let's chop up the paceman drivetrain, slam it into a twin charged R53 >

I find it hard to believe someone who can barely form a coherent sentence has a stable full of supercars and the discretionary funds or skills to undertake such an absurd conversion project. I thought this level of BS was exclusive to 4chan's Auto board, but I was wrong.
Eh who cares, everyone missed the point with a mini if they are talking about this.
want a faster car buy one.
Look at how well the R32 and the golf R do in comparison to the regular gti.
ruins the handling and they are not much faster due to the extra weight of the drive-line.
comes back to why try to re invent the wheel.
its always the internet engineers that have these good ideas, if it really would work that well one of us would have made it happen.

From what I can estimate to make this project somewhat feasible, I would use an r56 chassis, since both the countryman and cooper s use the N16 engine. The driveshaft tunnel is already built onthem where the exhaust goes, however, fabbing will still need to be done to accomodate the transfer case, so the fire wall, and engine cradle will need to be fabbed/ modified. Then the whole bottom of the rear would need to be changed and strengthened to hold and withstand the torque from the rear assembly. You'd be looking at about 15-20k to have a custom shop do that, not including the donor car and donor drive train. It would be neat, but it would ruin the handling characteristics that we all love these cars for.
The electric hub idea isn't too far a stretch...the new audi r8 Quattro diesel hybrid runs two wheels on electric motors to in a diesel hybrid motor (mind you this is a car they built for the 24 hr lemens) no idea how you would accomplish this but research the engineering if you can find it and there is a jumping ground.
Is AWD on the R53 entirely unnecessary but I still think it'd be cool and would've bought it as an option

Got pictures?

I saw a TV program on it in 2007..

Too bad this thread went into the abyss. I have an 06 MCS and was wondering of mating later model awd tranz and rear diff with all the bits to make it AWD just for the fun of it. I like to tinker and invent things. I have not looked at the body under the car and think that this will be the main limiting factor, unless the newer AWD trans does not mate to the older engine. If it wont mate, it wont be worth it to me.
Take a look at my link above. ( I'm sure you have already though ) it can be done as Getreg did it. I sew the TV show on it and it worked well. Granted they were not at Road America doing the test, mainly were in snowy/slippey conditions.. Can be done without hacking the car too pieces if you really want to do it... Just follow their lead. or go crazy and put the drivetrain of another MINI in the hatch for fulltime AWD with double the HP to boot!!!
Has anyone tried to contact getrag regarding this obviously amazing 4wd technology?
Or, is there any other tranny that would meet up and fit into the cooper? How does one even go about finding that out? I can't imagine having to try and install and rip out trannys all day until something fit...

I couldnt even find how much a salvaged AWD drive train from a newer cooper would cost or where I could buy. It is likely not all that hard to get adapters made to mate the later transmission to the earlier engine. Probably no more than a few hundred if you mapped it out and sent the dimensions of to someone with a CNC mill. I have a few friends that could easily tackle the manufacture part of this.....the main thing for me is finding the dang drive train.
