Another One-Ball Done

Hi All...
Just got my One-ball finished up on Saturday. The exhaust shop completed a quick a painless task for me, $50 later on the road. They did a great job and it is great shop (good deal, good folks) - recommended by a fellow NAMer. Anyone looking to get this done in the Portland area, PM me, I'll get you shop information.

Overall a little louder and little deeper. It pops and burbles more than it did before and that makes me happy driver - seems like overall engine sounds has been accentuated as well...

Attempting to embed a video below, with the link following...(ignore the loud screeching I forgot to turn my wipers off).

Well worth 50 dollars, and a good first step for any of those considering exhaust mods...

I have 35% on all the windows, sometimes I wish I did the rears a little darker, but same all the way around gives it a factory look IMO....

to me the one-ball is a no brainer, I mean if your into a little more sound, your not bad off $ wise if you dont like it and still always have the option to upgrade....good luck, dont spend to much!

Thanks.

Thanks for the info. I can justify 50 bucks with my wife way easier than a $900 Borla...

So now that you have been living with the mod for a while, what are your impressions? Noise, performance?

Thanks.

Sorry for the long wait on the response been doing some traveling....

First disclaimer is this...it is definitely not in the realm of a full aftermarket exhaust, with that being said I like the note that it has and the pop and burble is significantly amplified which puts a smile on my face during decel and downshifting. I feel like I got some performance out of it, but I could not put a number on it. Am I still happy, absolutely, and if you dont like it you are only out 50 bucks or so, and always still have the option to upgrade down the road (Which right now I dont think I will do since I am happy with it).

Got it done. 50 bucks and out the door. It took him a bit longer than yours. Mine is an '05 and the exhaust bends up right before the muffler and made welding more of a hassle.

I think the mod is good for at least 100 hp and several seconds off the quarter mile...

Hey Guys,

What exactly is the One-ball mod ?
I pretty much figure you just chop one side and cap the stub ?

But before I go into my closest muffler shop and ask the dude to give me a 1 Ball - I want to make sure i can explain it to him if he tries to kick me in the nackers

Thx,
Monza!

Essentially stock the piping goes into the resonator on the passenger side of the car out of the resonator into the muffler, out of the muffler to the tips...so the one ball removes the resonator completely. Piping straight to the muffler and then the tips. this diagram is super helpful and once they are under the car they should see exactly what is going on....

MC40OREGON,

Thanks - that is very helpful.
I think i have a 'leaky' muffler on the d.side tho so I might be stuffed.

Can the muffler be replaced - or a that point should I just go order an Alta or sumthin ??

Thx,
Monza.

I like the sound of my one-ball but I have been getting an off idle vibration that I need to hunt down. I think the 'other' muffler mount kept the resonance vibration lower. I'm going to play around with adding a mount right at the end of the straight section where it used to go towards the now missing muffler.

Glad to see your pleased with the "one ball mod". I am excited because I am going to a friends house tomorrow to do this. He lives by an exhaust shop and picking up a 2.5" smooth mandrel bent 90 with flared ends for about 15-20 bucks. He has a welder so it should go smooth!

Best thing is the price!

Does anyone know just how restrictive the stock mufflers are on the Mini S ???????

I was thinking about doing the "one ball " & replacing the stock muffler with a more free flow muffler.

Has anyone tried this on their S ? ? ?

I obviously have not done it myself but the thing I think you run into is a lack of space the space is really pretty tight under there. No cat is removed so I am pretty sure you are fine on emissions with the one ball. There are definitely people who have successfully swapped the muffler I think you just need to go with a really small one which may be lOud. Hope that helps...

Just finished my "one ball mod" this past saturday at my buddies house. Took about 3 hours with a pizza and a car wash. I also decided to take off my OEM chrome tips and sprayed them black to match my car theme.

I ended up getting a 90 degree elbow flared at each end for $15 bucks at the exhaust shop. side note is make sure they dont flare the ends out to much!

On the OEM exhaust before the first 90 the pipe offsets up about .5" before the passanger muffler. I would recomend cutting the pipe back about 1' before that 90 so you cut out that offset....this is what we did the second time It will save you the trouble of lining up the pipes. So, luckily my buddy had a scrap piece of 2.25" pipe to extend the factory pipe to make up the difference we cut out of the offset. I am not sure why but the pipe by the offset was a bit smaller than the 2.5" exhaust. I think it might be from being mandrel bent from the factory??

Hard to explain unless you look under you car and you can see the small offset in the factory exhaust (before the first 90 bend to your passanger side muffler).

So, in reality it could have taken about 2 hrs or so if we cut that offset out first.

So, everything is welded. I used one pipe clamp where we cut the offset incase i ever want to replace that back section of pipe to the muffler. Even though it is clamped my buddy still tacked it. No leaks!

All in all it cost me about $15 bucks in the 90 degree elbow. A pizza for about $15 bucks and 3 hrs!

It was worth every penny. It feels more responsive and it sounds great without being to loud which is what i was looking for.

Also, PITA part was cutting out the exhaust. We used a cutting wheel and saw zaw. We ended up cutting a wedge out which made room for the cutting wheel which made it easier. Using the saw zaw was tough. Cut a wedge in the pipe!

I hope this helps if anyone is interested in trying this at home.....and FYI it would have taken an hour if all i used were pipe clamps instead of welding.

Man, I was trying not to spend money modding my car, but this is too cheap to pass up.
