Drivetrain mini melt down
It's simply amazing to me that Peter at M7 is involved in this
deal and has suposedly verified that the ECU was putting out
solid +12 Volts DC which damaged the coil packs, but he doesn't
have the time to reply to this thread asking for verification of these facts.
I still have grave doubts about the validity of these explanations.
Peter, how is it possible for the ECU to put out a solid signal, but have
the car just run rough. That simply sounds impossible to me.
Is it likely that the plasma booster damaged the ECU outputs and caused this?
Do you have another explanation for the damage?
People keep PMing me for further analysis, and I have nothing but
doubts about the owner and the NAM sponsor M7 to give them.
(And, yes, I know that the ECU does not "put out +12 Volts DC", it
sinks the other end of the +12 Volts DC, but that's the way the owner
described it.)

More on the $12K dealio...
More on the $12K dealio...
I guess we can all come to our own conclusions.
I still don't understand how a "running-rough" turned into 3 bad computers, turned into a bad ECU with outputs that were at +12 Volts that blew up a coil pack, but the PB was never a suspect.
And the car just ran rough?
Me, I'm saying the PB killed the ECU.
How could we ever tell? You install, you take your chances with your money.

Trippy and the big Plasma Booster conspiracy. My god man do you think that Peter
was on the grassy knoll in Dallas as well? The owner of the car is sure that
the Plasma Booster didn't do it . The shop owner that repaired the car is sure
it wasn't the Plasma Booster but you sitting there at your keyboard have come
up with the one and only true conclusion. You need to change your vocation from
mad scientist to auto medium to the stars. Now you want to know who paid what
and how much. Who cares? If the owner of the car is happy with the situation
what business is it of ours and more importantly yours? The owner of the car
called Peter with a valid question about the PB. Peter then referred him to a
shop in town that has been doing some amazing things with Mini's. The owner
brought the car hundreds of miles to this shop and is very glad he did. I got
this information FIRST hand not from internet postings this past weekend by
talking to the OWNER personally at the track day at WIllow Springs. He would
love to do the same with you in person sometime by the way . Go outside and get some fresh air for a change. Maby go drive your mini instead of typing all over the internet about the evils og the plasma booster. Have a great day old auto guru to the masses

Forgive me, but I must. First, Trippy; you need a hobby. I agree with maxmini that you should be driving your mini instead of trying to intimidate posters. Second, it seems that your posting is in no way trying to help the forum members determine the cause of the problem. Third, I had to spend an additional amount of time reading your theories on ways that superiorsound was trying to falsely accuse MINI of scamming him out of $12k, that had you kept your thoughts to yourself, I would'nt have had to deal with. Fourth, the owner may have been more willing to post here had you not tried to point him out as a liar, which doesn't help anyone in finding out the resolve to the problem. I think the forum's purpose is to allow people to communicate their stories in a friendly manor. Try to be a little less accusing of those posting problems, or requests for help.
You're forgiven. Not a problem. I get ornery when people have suspicious stories that keep changing, and then go silent.
I should be more polite, but I get cranky. Sorry.
But guess what?
First, the engine is running rough, then it's $12,000 worth of damage due to the remote starter, then it's an engine computer that has shorted outputs, but never is it mentioned tht there was a Plasma Booster attached to those very same outputs?
Surprise! I'm skeptical of the whole deal, and now, no response about warranty.
I'm starting to think the thing was a hoax on me or something.

hmm, i just read through this whole post.
a couple of thoughts.
how long ago was the remote starter and pb installed?
did the ecu act up before? i.e. stumble, or whatever u call it.
why was the pb not mentioned before the remote starter!?!?
the pb is a product that connects to the ecu and alters spark.
and what is the outcome???
this story is suspect.

With any discussion on a topic like this, counterpoints should be welcome. Personally, I think Trippy has some valid questions. The dealers are being quick to dismiss malfunctions based on modifications. This is a good reason to think twice about gambling with marginal performance mods against the car's warrantee. The MINI is not tested so far for long-term reliability. We all read about various failures. Giving MINI a reason to question the source of the failure is a risk that you are taking when you add anything to alter the way it is designed to run. Look at the fun the dealers are having denying windshield warranties and there is no modification involved!
I can neither afford modifications or out of pocket repair costs at this time so I am waiting for long term reliability data on both the MINI and various mods before I delve into that area. I do read each and every mod thread to learn as much information both good and bad as possible to put in my back pocket for when the times come. So when someone has a problem with a dealer questioning the cause of a failure many people out here are interested in the REAL cause and solution. That's where Trippy comes in.

Until SS decides to enlighten this list about the resolution of his problem, it's all just yackety-yack. Still, I wish Superior Sound would come back - pretty please?

I had word from both parties involved with this situation today and the owner of the car will be making a statement shortly as to the true reason for the problem. He wants to wait until he comes down and has the car back in his hands before commenting further.Of course no one will believe him as he is only the owner of the car and how could he possibly know as much about his OWN vehicle as the resident internet experts.Of course now that the Plasma Booster has turned out not to have anything to do with it there must have been some sort of pay off .Ya that's it M7 is putting the car owners kids thru college . Well at least the weather is getting better maby some of you " specialists " can go outside and get a breath of fresh air for a change. Or even better I think the Kennedy assignation theorists need some new blood.Maby give them a call and help out.If all else fails O.J is still looking for the real killers of his wife, there is another guy that would appreciate some of your invaluable assistance . When you find out what really happened you will be bored by the simplicity of it all.
call me clueless but you are trying to make fun of people posting on the internet but you in fact are doing the same thing. WoW, brilliant.
i think people are just generally concerned when they see someone had damage of 12,000 dollars.
if they didnt want people to comment on the topic, dont post it.

>>Of course now that the Plasma Booster has turned out not to have anything to do with it
I've been wondering how it would be possible to demonstrate that theory.
Any ideas?
I'm open to suggestions on methods to demonstrate that the PB had nothing to do with it.
I promise to be open minded as long as others are also open minded about the possibility that the PB actually was the cause of the problems in the first place.
Ask for open mindedness, and it will be granted, but you need to be open minded also.

Good post truppy and the answer to this situation is that they did indeed find the problem and it was not related in any way to the Plasma Booster. As a matter of fact is is still on the car. Shortly the only tru authority on this situation, the car owner, will tell you all when he decides to post and put a end to the speculation and hopefully this link LOL .

Given MINIUSA's post saying that any aftermarket device that modifies the performance of the MINI voids the wararnty in this thread
I have some polite questions for the benefit of the MINI community:
1) Did MINIUSA know there was a Plasma Booster installed?
2) Was the PB on the car when they disgnosed the ECU failure?
3) Did the owner get the ECU replaced under warranty?
I do not believe that the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act (42 U.S.C. 2302(C)) applies to the addition of the PB.
It specifically relates to non BMW brand REPLACEMENT parts.
I do not believe it covers devices that were not specifically designed into the vehicle.

It's been almost 14 days.
Any hope of getting some answers to simple questions from the owner?
1) Did the dealer know you had a PB installed?
2) Did the dealer replace your ECU under waranty?
