You might check on the Mynes forum to see if they have anyone w/FA in your area.

As was indicated earlier, it is a hard code and must be reset by the appropriate hardware/software. If you have a local shop that works on BMW's, they should be able to clear your code. Like you said, it'll take 5 min.

Not yet, I moved today so haven't had time. Found someone locally though who says he can clear it.

Putttn is right about the Bytronic F/A , if someone near you has it, they can clear all of your codes and adaptatations, "you" do not have to have it installed, that function works on any R50/52/53, he put a message on the Mynes board for anyone that may be in the Portlandia area that could help you.

Also call around for shops that specialize in European & BMW repairs, they too would have the correct software to clear your codes. (there are 2 specific software types, I just can't remember what they're called right now?)

The fact that the dealer wants to charge you for something like this, that yes takes all of 5 min. is BS, I would never go back to them for anything that wasn't an absolute emergency. I had someone do it for me once, even when I offered to pay him for it he just said, "don't worry about it, just rember him if I needed a repair of some kind".

Good Luck, here in MO. our inspections are the same way, major PITA, just rember, once you get it done to fill the gas tank, and drive for a bit, (with some stop & starts) to give the freshly cleared ECU time to cycle through all its processes, the evap. probably takes the longest, and again if it's like ours, an incomplete cycle won't pass either.

Very good info, thank you.Yeah, they don't actually check the exhaust, only if all of the components are working correctly.

Were you able to clear the P2096 and if so how? I've reset the ECU, and connected the two battery terminals with a 5Amp fuse for twenty minutes and still nothing. Still throwing the code. What's meant by the 40 cycles required to turn it off as well? A little confused about that. And does anyone know if they can remove the code with the RMW remote tuner? Thank you all in advance!

Michael,

You're most likely looking at a trip to the dealer, they were able to reset all adaptations and clear the code.

Question though, what's your setup? Stock everything? There is an oxygen sensor/cat warranty, so if you're throwing that code on the stock setup, it should be covered free. But you HAVE to have all OEM parts installed.

I'm gonna try a BMW tuner shop first I think wanna avoid dealer fees. Gonna call in the morning to see if they have the tool. If not straight to the dealer. I was running an obx header to a test pipe to the invidia cat back for about a year and then got sick of the noise and the stink and the check engine light. So I put the stock cat in place of the test pipe yesterday, (cut off the stock header about a year ago) so unfortunately it's not really an option to go completely back to stock. So all I'm missing out of the original emission system is the small pre cat.

Tried that, one of the local MINI club guys works at a professional auto repair shop, tried clearing, didn't work. It's a hard code, and apparently even professional scanners can't clear it, but good luck.

If you have heard of the software INPA, you can use that to clear your adaptations. It's part of the BMW Coding package you can google up on. The cable is only around $60-100.
