Has anyone noticed this?

I installed an NS1 cam in my R53 this past weekend and found this "hardened sealent" inside the valve cover. Wasn't sure if this was normal or some kind of factory rework. I'm the original owner of my '06. BTW, I'm happy with NS1 cam performance. Also I had the plastic retainer caps even though my car was built in October '06.
