Drivetrain Good Reading
What kind of books pertaining to our cars have you guys been reading? Here's some of mine:
Bosch Automotive Handbook
This is the bible of automotive wisdom from regulations on agricultural vehicles to the behavior of continuously variable transmissions.
ME-Motronic Engine Management
This is a brief but informative look at Bosch's drive-by-wire engine management. It's not exactly the same as the Siemens EMS-2000 system in our cars, but many of tyhe same concepts apply.
Bosch Fuel Injection and Engine Management
This is a somewhat dated look at various types of fuel injection ranging from CIS to early pulsed to full-on Motronic.
Supercharged!
This is a bit of a rehash of Maximum Boost, but geared toward superchargers.
Race Car Engineering and Mechanics
Very interesting combination of theory and practice applying to all aspects of vehicle performance.
Secrets of Solo Racing
Great book on tightening the loose nut behind the wheel.
Mechanical Engineering Design
Okay, this one's only for the big nerds, but it is a very, very useful reference. The insides of the front and back covers contain more useful info than some whole textbooks.

I would add on the following two books to your great library.
Inner Speed Secrets Mental Strategies to maximize your racing performance.
After having read lots about how car dynamics work in depth over and over, this dramatically helped wrap everything together in my head. It is all for the mental side to staying focused and being a being driver. It helped me tremendously become a much better and quicker driver.
The Technique of Motor Racing by Piero Taruffi
This is a superb book to understanding the art and science of motor racing. Although it was first published in England in 1959, it has passed the test of time and I would most probably recommend it a decade from now.

Great list Andy. Any suggestions for reading on welding (cro-mo and/or Ti tubing.) Unrelated to MINIs, really, just looking for a good place to start.
Also interested in any good recs. on exhaust design and the supporting theorem.
Changed majors from an engineering program two years in, but still dig the reading.
Thanks,
Jeff

Almost forgot. http://www.bookchecker.com rawks for finding books on the cheap. It's also a good start to find hard-to-find stuff.

jlm is THE MAN when it comes to welding. If he doesn't know the answer, I'm sure he can point you in the right direction. I've never personally welded anything, soldered tons, but welded none.
Andy,
I have one you might like but i have only found it in book form, not on the web, but do some searching it may be there....
Four-Stroke Performance Tuning, by A. Graham Bell, published under Haynes, they also have a two stroke version, if someone is into modding two strokes as well....
lots of good formulas, explenations, and theories as well, covers all fourstrokes from motorcycles to drag cars, indy cars, rally cars, talks about he differences each type of racing needs, and how to gain those areas, it covers the whole basis, i use it alot in my tuning, kinda a bible if i might dare to say.....Enjoy!!

Cadman,
Gordon Jennings (RIP) book on two-stroke tuning is supposed to be *the* book to read. Haven't picked up a copy, but have perused a friend's.
One of my fave sources is http://www.motorbooks.com
They have some awesome racing books. Books on restoration, tuning and driving. I have a book from them bedside on restoring two-valve ducatis.

Here's a link with a bunch of the classics;

The first edition of 4 stroke tuning.. came out in 1981 & is a must read. He explains things in a concise & easy to follow manner. Haven't read the 2nd edition or his book on Forced induction. The Vizard books are interesting for basic theory & any gearhead would be interested in how he makes power from a siamesed port head.
For handling, 'How to make your car handle' by Fred Puhn & 'The front Wheel drive performance advantage' by Jack Doo are good basic primers. The title of the latter promises more than it delivers, but it's not bad. The Carroll Smith books have additional info on race car handling prep (bump steer, weight jacking, etc) Occassionally you see them in Barnes & Noble.

Slideways, i have the second edition, and agree it is a must read, but didnt realize he had one on forced induction....I'll be checking into that one... He does however touch upon force induction with the second edition, but im sure its not as detailed, so thanks again for more good reading.......
Sorry this is a late post. If you haven't already googled this, here's a link for Bell's other books including the forced induction title;

I'm just finishing up Secrets of Solo Racing in hopes of getting some hints on running in solo II this spring. I thought it was very comprehensive for beginers and experienced alike. The 'diagrams' could be a little better, but other than that it was a good read. I got it on half.com for like $8.
The next books I want to check out are Brock Yates 'Cannonball' and Smokey Yunicks "Best D*mn garage in town' Anyone read either of these yet?
