I hope you keep it forever. When good material posessions become symbolic for something larger (your grandfather), they should be kept. Keep it.

It's all relative: I average a new set of keys every 9 months, so if I keep MM2 for longer than a year, it's "forever" to me!

Keep good memories of your grandfather forever; don't expect the MINI to last. Remember, it is a $20k car that is being subjected to some real physical abuse. Also, the warranty doesn't last forever.

You could consider buying a new MINI every 5-7 years (or some other reasonable interval) in your grandfather's memory....

p.s. Don't you think that, as new technologies are introduced, gas mileage improved, and safety features added that your grandfather would want you to benefit from them???

Sorry about your Grandfather,I lost my father two years ago (Jan. 3).
BUT.... I still have his 1966 Ford Mustang ,bought new ($2500.00 I have the reciept) and driven by him ,my sister and myself . Really ,It is pretty basic ,6 cyl.
auto trans. no power ANYTHING! But it is the family's car now and we all have many memorys of it with my dad , and thats what its all about ,MEMORIES. The Mustang will always (as long as I live ) be in the family . My EB MCS will eventually be a handme down to my son as my Miata will be for my daughter when she is old enough to drive. The MINI .like the Miata is a keeper . My question is ,what will be the next "keeper" ?

mine's a keeper!

I even told my nephew when I depart the planet, he gets the car. he'll do right by her.

That's not to say there won't be others. I'm looking forward to an elise too. And if they ever bring out the retro chevy belaire it's gonna be in the drive.

My problem is that i like cars way too much.

Sorry to hear about the passing of your grandfather.

I have been keeping my cars. Before my MINI I had one car for 9 years and the other for 12 years.
So far after 10,000 miles my MCS is doing fine so I think I will be keeping it and passing it along to my son who is 13 soon. When I was growing up my father had a 63 T-bird that was in pristine condition but he sold it before I reached high school.

I think 10 to 20 years for my MCS would be my best guess at this point. It's a classic in the making.

Sorry to hear about your grandfather. Grandads are special. Mine has been gone for 20 years and I still miss him.

I got my S pretty early on...took delivery in July of '02. I love to drive it except when some new trouble is rearing its head. Nothing has been serious, but the minor problems have been numerous. At times I've even been disgusted with it, because I DO want to keep it for many years, but I know I won't if it starts to nickel and dime me to death. If the car settles down and proves to be reliable I will keep it as long as is practical. I do park it during the winter so the road salt here in Illinois doesn't eat it up, so I'm hoping for the best.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your grandfather. My dad died two weeks ago, so I understand your feelings about wanting to keep a rememberance of him. However, memories will always last longer than material things, so hang onto the good memories of your grandfather.

I plan on keeping my MINI for a long time too. It's quickly earning a soft spot in my heart which may come to the point of a "forever" ownership. I already have reached that point with my Miata which is going on 13 years of ownership. I like what Jay Leno refers to as being a "caretaker", not the owner of his cars. I also like the sentiment of our resident sage, d-mini-ero, of continuing to enjoy new experiences. I think there is a good balance to be found in maintaining it as if you are going to keep it forever, but enjoying it as if it will be gone tomorrow.

Motor on,

Sorry about your grandfather's death. If you are planning to keep the car "forever" try to find a house or apartment with a garage. A heated garage would be even better. What ever else you do, don't let the car sit undriven for any extended periods. Watch for moisture leaks into the interior. Fog on the inside of your windows indicates that condensation on interior metal components is very likely. Rust and mildew/mold can destroy the interior of a car. A heated garage helps a car dry out over night, and the engine will not be as cold when you start it. A garage helps you keep the car looking nice in case you decide to or need to sell it.

When my MCS arrives, I will enjoy it as long as possible. Barring a bad crash, I plan to keep it forever (until I die); however, forever is a long time and one always need to be open to changes. There may be some reasons to upgrade, like if MINI came out with a 250+ hp factory all wheel drive version of the MINI.

Sorry about your Grandfather.
No. I don't plan on keeping mine forever.
Forever is a long time and I don't have that
kind of attachment to the new MINI.

Sounds like a great idea but forever could be a long long time for young people.
I am nearly 70 years old and ve owned the old Cooper when I first got married untill the children arrived.
This xmas I ordered a Cooper S and hope to get it soon. My dexterity will dictate how long I will keep it but at this time 2-3 years look good to me at which time some of the warranty will be left.
Good luck with yours too.

I've thought a number of times that I would keep a car forever, but forever just turns out to last too long. I loved my first Miata and thought I'd never part with it, but now I'm on my third Miata. I just loved my E30, but replaced it with an E46 that I also loved, and then I replaced the E46 with an MCS. (The wife loves recounting the litany of my serial automotive affections. She usually includes the 1985 Renault Alliance -- which seemed like a great car at the time -- and the 1989 Dodge Omni. Coldhearted gal, the wife.)

As charming as the Mini is, I doubt that it will be my A car for very much longer. How many of us have been truly, madly, deeply in love with The One, but then The One turned out to be . . . a learning experience?

not too likely, I like to drive a new car and the "improvements" they have. I'd say prolly 5 years "ish" and I'll get a new one... I've owned a 1986 Grand Am (high school beater), 1989 Pontiac Bonneville, 1996 Tahoe (briefly- lease), 1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue GL, 2001 Oldsmobile Intrigue GLS, and a 2002 Corvette Coupe (lease- going soon)... Plus a variety of rental cars when I travel for work (many European

I totally agree with you on those valid points, but I didn't say that it would be my daily driver forever. I would love to get another MINI in a few years to take over the everyday driver responsibilities, but keeping the MINI as a colletors item and keeping it restored for the future was more the intent I had. Keeping it mint like that will be pretty challenging, but I think it will be very fulfilling, too.

My Pops had a 66 mustang auto with a 289 back in California. He passed a few years back as well, but the car passed before he did. Some 17 year old young lady totally blew a red light and nailed him in the drivers side front fender about half a foot from the drivers side door. He was fine, but the car was totally done. Great car though! It was baby blue...like my little EB Mini..lol.

Sorry for the loss of your Grandfather. It is a noble thought but, forever is a long long time. Keeping a car forever would be quite an undertaking. Cars wear out when you drive them and they don't store very well without a lot of work involved. My feeling would be to keep it as long as you can and enjoy it while you have it. That is what they are meant for.
I'm keeping mine until I grow tired of it, maybe next month, maybe 20 years for now.

as long as I've got left... I've owned 26 cars in my 56 years... but that's like saying I dated 25 other women before I met my wife. Love changes things. I hoped I would meet someone and fall in love. I did. I never thought I'd fall for a car. I did. I have every intention of keeping them both for the rest of my years.
