the Madness/Rouge/Pilo design sounds quite nice - a basic amplification of the stock intake, with a touch more throttle body wooshing.

The ALTA intake sounds great, excellent tone and "sucking for air" with that high flowing UNI filter. However the real kicker is when you put on the ALTA silicone tube. Then, during WOT - it's loud!. This smooth but raunchy growl that just sings like a really ticked-off Electric pool vacuum (hey, it IS an MCS afterall, lol).

What I love about all of them, however, is the loudness is proportional to your right foot. During cruising, none of them are audible above stock. The question begs, how loud do you want it when you mash the throttle?

I own the Alta, but Pipercross sounds the best IMHO.

Ryephile gave a really good description of the Alta...how would you describe the pipercross in comparison?

Mine is a combination of the Alta and Maddness, maddness type air box, cowl mod (extra holes) and a larger intake tube. I was following a corvette through the twistes( @ about 90 mph) and he later said he could hear the supercharger whine over his exhaust! Very cool at WOT but quiet during normal driving.

Our intake will be available in about 4 weeks and sounds WICKED! It's also got Carbon Fiber (We're coming out with a matching intercooler cover as well in CF).

More on the kit later

Yep, I have the hose as well. He's spot on when he says it sounds like an electric pool vacuum at WOT. The thing about the Alta that I don't like is that it makes a sort of queefing/whistling sound (sorry, I can't think of any other way to describe it) when you are at part throttle and when you let off after taking up through the revs. The pipercross in comparison sounds like it's sucking and just becomes louder the faster you go, there isn't any other noises or whistling.

Yeah! I hung out with Kash at the LA auto show! He's a good guy, very knowledgable about the automotive aftermarket.

I can't speak on any other intake systems, but I installed my Alta intake with RED silicone hose 2 weeks ago. (My Christmas present!)

What a fantastic difference in noise! I would buy it again just for that purpose alone, not to mention the little extra kick and throttle smoothness I percieve.

One thing is for sure, an Alta equipped MINI has the most unique sound on the road... enough that every riceboy honda that might even THINK about trying to run you, will reconsider what he's getting into when he hears you blip the throttle.

I'd say the Alta intake with HOSE and reduction pulley.
You WILL easily hear it over your aftermarket exhaust.
The sound is more than half the fun.

I would have to agree about the ALTA - I have that and the hose on a JCW. The intake is louder than the exhuast but keep in mind where you sit....

If you did want to eliminate some of the noise you can always replace just the firewall cover - it will fit - but unless you are on the gas it is almost like stock...

I would say the ALTA also. I love the way it sounds WOT and also I like the ssssss sound of air when you barely hit the gas. The difference between stock or something like the rogue and the ALTA is very different. IMHO ALTA is the only way to go.

Thanks guys!
How about the differences between BMP/Promini and Alta? I've narrowed it down to those two but leaning towards Alta.

The best soundsing intake BY FAR is the modded stock intake that cost you nothing to do except about an hours worth of time. What to do: pull out the plastic divider behind the air box just like the alta intake makes you do, and pull out your entire airbox. Cut a 5"x3" square hole into the bottom half of the airbox (the side of it that faces the drivers seat), then make a matching hole in the plastic divider that came on the car. Then go to discount autoparts and buy some of the generic seals that they sell for car doors and either CA glue or epoxy the seal onto the outside of the airbox and onto the inside of the plastic divider. Then install it, and WOW you have an oficial cold air intake that the dealer will not be able to see, that is perfectly sealed off to any and all hot air, and it only cost you a few bucks. The only thing you'll have to add to get the most performance out of the system is a K&N air filter. But if all you're looking for is sound then keep the factory airfilter for now and enjoy the sweet whine of the supercharger when you get on the gas

If you want pics of the mods up close email me for them at Onecleancooper@hotmail.com happy motoring!

1cleancooper, tried to send you mail, but it got sent back.
Mine is d2mini@houston.rr.com

Anyone else have any experience or thoughts about this DIY mod?
Any hp gained from it if using the K&N?

All of the intakes have a similar sound, some are just a little bit louder. ANY of the intakes on the market now can be made to be just as loud as the alta intake if you just remove the plastic peice behind the airbox. HTH

Curious if anybody has installed this new intake from bavarian auto? It sure looks great with the chrome and all. About $180 on the website. I found it surfing the web the other day.
